The Hardcore Modeling MINI-Challenge #1: The David

#21

umm, definitely worth considering…

#22

well ive been wanting to try and model david for a long time now, and u just had to make this challenge fall right on finals… im gonna give it a go as my first challenge but i really dont see myself finishing by the 15th

If you dont have time
Do a Body Part

The hands of The David are marvels of sculpture.
or better yet, sculpt The face.

By taking apart this model, you will learn a lot from the master.
And here is alink where you can SEE a HIGH RESOLUTION SCAN
in 3D of the original. (http://graphics.stanford.edu/software/scanview/)

That kind of entry will take you a week tops.

Not exactly true, believe or not, we all are at a different ( even if it’s slightly ) level for modeling. Not all of us will see the same thing (details). I for example suck at modeling, but I will be considering joining this, b/c even if I don’t come close I think I’ll walk away with a great deal from this excerise.

God I am going to sound like a cheesy motivational speaker… but what the hell.

Yes you will learn.
By the mere act of TRYING it, you will learn more than just doing NOTHING.
There is this myth among art students, that people keep tabs of your faliures, and that all you post has to be perfect.

Well guess what, they dont care.

Just try it, fail, get up and try again. That is how you learn.

As I like to say:
“There are enough people who will tell you you cant do something, they dont need YOUR help.”

hey roberto
ill join and hopefully ill have time to finish this model. my work takes up 75 percent of my hours, no kidding

since its not going to be an animated piece i would think edgeflow is not important and can be modeled in its normal pose; but ill try

about scanview…love it, best thing that could ever happen to my modeling.
is there a way we can so other members models through it or not?

id be interested in seeing a few of the models posted here. and in the forums in general

if its off-topic please move this if necessary

What I mean is the entries from the best modelers will be identical, since the point of the exercise is to model as close to reality as possible, and they’ll be able to do that to more or less the same degree, and therefore end up with virtually identical results.
Still, you’re right, it’s nice to have a extra reason to model something like this, and an extra incentive to do it, not only to the best of your ability, but to raise your personal bar and make it even better.

#28

Would love to jump in on this. Could use the practice. Too bad I’m deep into my Journey entry. :frowning:

#29

Yea I’m gonna do this :D. Break in my new modo. GL everyone!!

Im gonna go start a 3D wip thread.

Wow, this sure is hardcore. I’m not entering as I’m not a 3der, but good luck guys and I’ll be keeping an eye on this!

#31

I have a little tip for everyone thats going to be entering…

David’s body, if you were to look at it strait on, or from far away looks very awkard and long - this is because it’s meant to be viewed up close and looking up at it (because it’s so tall). When you do view it from up close and underneath his body proportions seem normal.

This is a very important detail that Michelangelo worked very hard on - just wondering if anyone wants to give it a shot in their model

#32

Did I miss something or is there a reason that I’m the only one with a wip thread in the 3D still wip section?

You’re loosing valuable time here, guys, I’m already one hour ahead of you all!

#33

excellent idea. Even I’ve got enough time to participate to this challenge I wish a good luck to everybody  Can’t wait to see the entries.

#34

Fantastic Idea for a challenge, I always felt there should be a modelling challenge  Subject is great also, learn from the true masters!

#35

Awesome idea. Im in.

#36

Just want to say that I think it is a very good idea, and cool! I’m happy that this challenge is taking place. Unfortunately this challenge is too advanced for me at this moment, and I’m in the middle of something else. Next time!

Good luck everyone!

#37

My advice it to at least try a body part.
Feet, hands, Hell even the eyes .

It will be a valuable experience.

#38

heck, right in the day my company moves to another country and we all get fired

#39

hmm, might just try this as i need the practise.

Would it be ok to try and pose david differently, could come up with some funny results??

#40

Very nice Challenge! I wont to see this.
