Final Submission: Hardcore Modeling Mini-Challenge: The David (Right Hand) by fx81

I hope i am not out of time, anyways here is the final render. My main objective was to creat a replica, not just model the whole thing for the sake of modeling it but appreciate the master piece and understand it. This was a good excercise for learning hand anatomy and i also got to appreciate Michalengelo’s art more than before. Thanks everyone for critiques and comments.

  Finshed at last *wipes brow*

60 hours well spent I think. This is the hardest model I’ve ever made, but it’s also the best result I’ve had, and I’ve learned more from making it than any other model I’ve done.
I would never have had the willpower or stamina to complete something like this had it not been for this competition.
Well done to anyone else who completes this.

THE HARDCORE MODELING MINI-CHALLENGE!
THE DAVID

Michelangelo’s David, sculpted from 1501 to 1504, is a masterpiece of Renaissancesculpture and one of Michelangelo’s two greatest works of sculpture, along with the Pietà. David portrays the BiblicalKing David at the moment that he decides to engage Goliath. The Statue is not so much a portrayal of mere brawn but rather of cleverness, in David’s biblical defeat of the giant Goliath. This 5.17 meter (17 ft) marble statue came to symbolise the Florentine Republic. The completed sculpture was unveiled on September 8, 1504.

THE CHALLENGE:________________________________________

Sculpt a digital reproduction of the DAVID in 3D. It took Michelangelo 4 years to sculpt this world treasure, you will only have 3 weeks.

CAN YOU DO IT?

What is the HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE?

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. To get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark…

The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DATELINES.

In this challenge you may do:

[ul]
[li]Body Part ( You may do hands, head, torso etc)[/li][li]Full Body(You aim to sculpt the whole object)[/li][li]FULL BODY & SHADING (You aim to sculpt the whole object & Shade it)[/li][/ul]Since this is a MODELING CHALLENGE we will concentrate on creating a realistic copy of this famous stature.

At the end of the challenge, the participant should have done a finished entry that looks EXACTLY like either a body part of the DAVID or a Full representation of the sculpture. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have THREE WEEKS to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don’t win, will be your improved skills in ADVANCED anatomy.

You have to provide a heavily edited animation with all the trimmings, as long a you

You missed a bit in that sentence Roberto. This looks intriguing!

#3

Thanks, I just hope we get at least ONE finished entry…
-R

#4

I’m in, I hope to finish it also, this will be a good exercise.

#5

Don’t want to be a smarty pants here, but May 14 is a Sunday.

and also, I will try to do this challange.

Body parts you say…? Hmmm, Statue of David. What famous bodypart could I make…?

Nae, I’ll make the whole darn body.

#6

Think ill give this ago. Be interesting to see what others come up with

#7

Wow this look cool! I knew the digital Michelangelo… there is a scan database in ply but only accessible to members (usr/pass) - I always imagine to model from fresh using this pictures as references! Keep going

#8

#9

Damit, wish I had time to do this!

#10

I predict zbrush to win

#11

wow this sounds like fun, I wonder if I can put some time aside for this. although I think I am going snowboarding this weekend. I think boarding takes precedence.

Man, I hope nobody tries to get ahold of that scan, that would just be cheating. :curious:

#12

yeah seriously, how is this going to be judged? I mean there is a big difference in modeling correct (‘good’ would probably be a better phrase) topology for the whole thing and sculpting a low poly model in zbrush.

#13

woooow that could be great to do! haven’t got time tho… i wish, i’m sure that would be a damm good exercise for modelling

#14

Will be following this one, great choice Roberto!

#15

Ahh I had a nigglin it was gonna be this!

I’ll see if i have time to enter.

#16

This looks really cool! I wish I had the time to do this. But its the end of the semester cram time. :frowning: I always wanted to model him.

#17

Open voting.
Belive it or not, it is a simple who can make a model that looks as close to the real deal.
-R

#18

I’d imagine this contest will be virtually impossible to judge though.
Everyone modeling the same thing, and we all have access to very, very detailed scans of it, so every model will be virtually identical.
I don’t envy the judges.

#19

this sure sounds cool:)
i’ll see if i can sqeeze in some time for this.

-r

#20

That is why we are doing open voting.

To be honest, as in most of our challenges,
the emphasis is more in LEARNING than WINNING.
After all the prize is a silly graphic, and hopefully a nice entry for your portfolio.

We may think it is easy to do a single human figure in three weeks,
but to do one with PERFECT anatomy, that is another story.

The advantage of picking masterpieces, is that it show us,
mere mortals WHY they are masterpieces, and that there is a
LOT we still have to learn.

And I am 100% sure we will not end up with identical entries, and that is OK.
We are here to learn not be judged (pun intended)
