I have been doing some research on Art Deco textiles trying to find what I wanted to do on the girl’s dress in Songbird and I think I finally found the patterning I want to use. Also, trying to get the perspective right for the balcony.

Movie magazines, in particular, were incredibly popular at the turn of the century. Many of the wonderful covers on several magazines were by an illustrator, Earl Christy.

Hey Cris,
If you haven’t heard, there is a major Joseph Leyendecker
Exhibit at the Haggin Museum in Stockton (www.hagginmuseum.org). It is
scheduled to run to the end of the year.
There is NO catalog. The exhibit is supposed to travel next year, but no venues have been announced. This is something worth seeing, I know, but I’m bummed, 'cause it’s so faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.

This is an excellent resource for illustrations of the Golden Age. There are very good articles accompanying many illustration examples. I recommend bookmarking it.

Hi, Brooke. I’m so sorry to hear you’re in a blue place right now. Ya know, personally, I fight depression all the time…it’s a struggle. I have unfinished pieces all over the place…hah! I am working out some aspects of Songbird, but am trying to finish a portrait of Claudia from Interview for the Vampire for a project. You can see her in my Sketchbook thread (check my sig). I love these popular science covers! It’d make an interesting discussion to come up with exactly how they ‘did’ that style:

[li]Strong, saturated colors. [/li][li]Very clearly delineated forms.[/li][li]Geometric shapes.[/li][li]‘Standardized’ male/female faces/bodies.[/li][li]Use of classical composition formats.[/li][/ul]If anyone comes up with more to add to the ‘formula’, post them!

P.S-- I love the ‘birth of the pearl’ painting, that’d look lovely on my wall.

Maybe Chris is busy preparing for her new workshop? We still miss you! I still love this thread, and I’m still building myself up to colouring that Mucha piece. In the meanwhile, can I tempt you to return with some more GAoI style wips?

A fantasy take on the classic male, and trying my hand at the Arrow Collars black out style mixed with a little swirly Mucha. Just gotta figure this whole colour malarky out now. And possibly Painter. That program still scares me.
