Great work Steven! The other image of Fifi being lit by just the HDR image is really quite amazing. Would you mind elaborating a bit on your process for the SSS shader? Recently I’ve been doing all my SSS layering as seperate renders. It’s always interesting to see how other artists go about it. Great job again

#29

I like the Girl but the Mummy really makes it . . great job man!

Can you post a larger version of the whole pic? Around the size of the detail shots you followed up with? I can understand if you choose not to.

Here you can see a before (left) and after (right) I retouched it in Photoshop. The most noticeable item would be the candle flame - I’m originally a 2d artist, and if an element is easier to add in 2d then of course I will.

By ‘falloff’ in the transparency channel, I mean that the transparency is changing with the angle of the surface to the camera. The stockings get less transparent towards the edges of the legs, as in reality.

The sss effect is achieved by using the misss_fast_skin shader by Hakan Andersson, you can read more about it in the Maya > Render forum here. It comes natively with Maya v7. Previously I’ve used lots of layers, with Ambient Occlusion and different highlights etc, but for this one I wanted to simplify it and it seems to be working ok all on its own now.

Great work! Five stars from me. It reminded me of a cartoon I once saw. it was kinda’ like this one http://media.santabanta.com/joke/cartoons/part5/adult/cartoons/wow3.jpg although not exactly the same (it’s all I could find on Google at a quick search).

#33

Hahaha, this is awesome. nice work.

#34

yeah…the master comes with another great piece of work…
all i can say is…I LOVE IT!

#35

Nice, the lighting is a bit flat though. The razor crisp shadow lines are a bit distracting too, since you’re rendering with MR why not use area shadows?

#36

awesome idea!!! grate job on this one! Five stars from me.

#37

Fun pic! I like it!

Hi Stahlberg,

great work as always. few crits: the hair looks a bit like plastic, even if I know it’s very hard to make it appear real; maybe reducing the glossiness just a bit… The crates are unreal (yes I know, you’ll say “who will ever look at the crates…”) but wou could add some detail to make it look older and consumed and some bump map so the wood texture would be less “flat”. At last, there’s something very odd with the upper part of the right calf, it’s totally different from the other calf, is photoshop involved?

Apart from that, everything is perfect: the atmosphere, the pretty girl, and the mummy’s face! One more thing, could you post some better picture of the maid??
