I hate to disagree, especially as the work was so well done, but there were a few places for me where the compositing really leapt out. Mostly revolving around the Kraken, especially noticable when Captain Jack jumped at it. Also, some times, the CG-ness of the crew did become a bit apparent.
That said, at no point, did I ever, for one second, think that Davy jones was not ‘real’ and in the set. He was a shining example of what can be done with CG now and when I did find time to ‘step out’ of the film story, I just kept thinking, “I can’t believe that isn’t prosthetics”. :applause: :applause:
As to the film overall, some bits were overlong, others a bit ‘fuzzy’, but an enjoyable romp and I am happily looking forward to the next film. Loved the “surprise” right at the end too.
saw movie last week and didn’t know DJ was CG:eek:
One movie where CG has no competition from humans. If i could hold the remote i would’ve zipped by the pathetic acting to watch the cg parts frame by frame.
I shudder that i now need a hubble telescope to keep track of the ILM benchmark.
If you can believe, I finally got the changce to see the movie only yesterday.
How Davy held up in big sceen actually exceeded my expectation though I had already seen most of it on my monitor.
I had to come in here again to personally say congrats to you, Marc.
You had so many shots and animators to look over, and so many - too many - shapes to look over.
My big appreciation to you and all the animators who were involved in Davy.
Cool link. It seems to me like pic 6 of 6 should of been the completed Davy playing the paino.
Thank to the guys @ ILM for bringing back some magic to the movies! This was real stunning work, and it had me looking and enjoying the character instead of just noticing the flaws.
Hats of to you guys! I cant wait to see more in the next installment of pirates.
ok, so…
Davey Jones was fully cg… I still can’t come to grips with that. Wow!
Hazaa! to the folks at ILM. Great work. I need to see the movie again now, cause I really thought it was the actor with prosthetics and some cg replacement parts. Wow again!
A couple of things…
I’d like to echo Jung-seung’s conmments on Marc Chu (Loki). As the Davy lead animator and the associate anim supe Marc was my right hand guy through the whole thing. He was the first animator on the project (after me), and the last one off. He put loads of time into working with Jung-seung and Geoff Campbell (the modelling supe) on the facial controls, and worked with all the animators to ensure consistency across all our Davy shots.
To answer Jared: There was a lot of overtime on this show. We worked a lot of 6 day weeks. Folks familiar with the games industry would probably laugh at the amount we did, but for us it was a lot. Can’t answer your question about Davy’s shaders (maybe if John gets a moment he’ll chime back in). Chances are that we will be looking to hire animators this winter, but I don’t know about TD’s, Compositers, etc.
rblitz7: Don’t know where you can get Davy Jones wallpapers. Maybe the official site?

Hal,
Did you guys go right into Pirates 3 after finishing DMC?
There’s a quote from you on another site about developing a facial mocap system. Is this for Pirates 3 or down the road further?
Hal/splinebender -
Can you tell me if you know if there is going to be a" Art of" or a “Making of” book on POTC2?
I know Cinefex is going to do a article on it in the next issue, but they dont always show “a lot” of the artwork.
Thanks

I know this is the Davey Jones appreciation thread and deservedly so, but what about some other stuff in the film?
How were wide shots of the Cannibal tribe’s home accomplished? Was that matte paintings? CG set extension?
Thanks again to all at ILM for contributing great fx to an entertaining summer movie.
I kinda feel sorry for WETA beeing on the 2nd place now…but what a hell…ILM prooved who is the best now. Probably WETA will come with smth awesome too…but dunno if will have the same impact (deffintly King kongs fur didn’t) as Davey has on us now.
I wonder when will we see in the WIP section models with Davey Jones (only attempts )
Jeeesh…Davey is too good to be true. I really can’t imagine the proportions of this . What happens now? Actors retire and sale their copyrights to movie studios ? :wip:

Nighy and the other actors were on set and ILMers have mentioned their performances drove the characters so they still have to be there and act.
Roger:
Dunno about Art of, or Making Of books. I don’t think there was one for the first film, but then again, there is a lot more of a merchandising push this time around.
THX 1173:
Yes we’re going straight into P3. They’ve shot about a third of P3 already and resume shooting this August to finish it off. No facial mocap for us on P3, but yes ILM is pursuing it.
The Cannibal Island stuff was shot on the island of Dominica. It’s a beautiful volcanic island in the Caribbean. It’s mountainous and covered with jungle from end to end, but it wasn’t quite dramatic enough for Gore’s vision of Cannibal Island. He wanted those really verticial “Machu Pichu” like mountains, with deep gorges between them. About 75% of the Cannibal Island shots have matte paintings and/or 3D set extensions.
Thanks spline.
Wow, that much work on Cannibal Island.

That’s too bad. I really miss the BTS books for these films. Seems there’s either none or ones that are released are published before any final shots or even fx work can be included. Superman Returns has a Making of and it has a whopping 1 or 2 pages of vfx text with one greenscreen shot.
