What really amazes me is that I totally recogniced the actor, even though it was totally CG ! And I didn’t know in advance who it was until I saw the movie. You guys REALLY pinned the real actors manerisms on Davey !
Fabulous work indeed !

Just another sheep here, I was blown away when I found out he was all CG. Without a doubt the most convincing CG performance yet.
EDIT: Actually, something that’s just dumbfounding is how ILM managed to make Davey look so good at all times. A digital creature this complex can come with lots of problems when it has to move. Most artists who can create models up to this caliber can only hope to get a one or two good still shots, while the team at ILM had it performing for a 2 1/2 hour film. Good god!
I liked the movie, but thought that the story could be a lot better although the special effects made up for it the movie could of had a better result if it had better story lines. The character Davey Jones was amazing and i liked every aspect of it. I think they did a good job on it and congrats to everyone who worked on it.![]()
Since Loki chimed in with thanks to various responsible parties, I thought it ought to be pointed out that he was the associate anim supe, and the lead animator for Davy.
NO FREAKING WAY, I though most of it was a mask…hahahahaaaaa, thats amazing…wow…for the first time I could tell it was cgi…GREAT JOB
This is a bit off-topic, but I noticed that Marc, whom Hal pointed out as Davy’s lead animator, appears to be with Kerner Optical, instead of ILM? As I understood it, Kerner Optical was the physical production branch of ILM – models, explosions, and whatnot – split off into its own company. Not a whole lot of CG at KO, unless I’m mistaken. Just curious why you’re with the physical as opposed to the digital branch, Marc.
Apologies if I’m broaching sensitive political territory or any such things.
Just saw it today, and I thought Davy was amazing, great job!
-Loved the movie also!
Amazing work!
We should have a separate appreciation thread just for Davey Jones’s eyes. Looking at his eyes, I had been wondering if they were live-action or plate-mapped from the real actor or something. Truly amazing.
Davey Jones’s eyes start me thinking about the bright future that mocapped characters in general could have. I mean, what if an all-CG film like Beowolf had characters with eyes that good? Instead of the zombie look, what if the characters in a mocapped feature had eyes that made it hard to believe you weren’t looking at a real person? That would change everything, wouldn’t it?

In a word, yes. The soul is seen through the eyes, and the problem up to this point has been a soulless cg character. However, suddenly Davy Jones had true eyes, believable eyes, and a presence. I said it before on this thread and I’ll say it again, the future is looking bright for cg with video again.
Agreed on the statement on the eyes. What is also scare is the ROCK SOLID composite work done on this movie.
Too often CG characters stick out like a sore thumb, but in this case all comp elements mesh beautifully together,

holy mother of god, i want to see this movie  The comments on this thread have me jumping around like a “ferret on crystal meth” :banghead:
Go see it, but from the way you sound, I should warn you not to go in with your expectations set too high. As a movie, it’s a fun ride, if you don’t worry too much about details in the story or the style of acting (usually comical and over-the-top) and just enjoy it as a action flick with great VFX. In my experience, when I go into a movie expecting too much, I usually come out critical and disappointed, and I wouldn’t want that to happen to you just because of our high praise for the great CG in the film.

DJ was terrific!
Went and saw it today, and massive quantities of kudos on Davy Jones and the crew of the Flying Dutchman. Overall it was a fun ride, lots of great scenes and gags…
Good Job all.

Hey, thanks a lot for the heads up ![]()
Actually, i agree with you about the expectations thing; and well, im not waiting to be enlighten by it, i expect a “fun ride”, which i almost sure it will deliver :).
I am with ILM (stuck behind a computer) but what can I say, I’m old-fashioned.
Over on Kerner it was a real treat to walk over and hang out with all the model shop guys over the years. As it was mentioned earlier in this thread, they did some great model work for the beached Pearl. I wish Mark Anderson and his crew the best of luck in keeping that art, the reason why a lot of us entered the biz, alive and kicking.
Well, “Kerner Optical” might be it’s own entity now but at least we still have the front door.

… along with in-house compositing program CompTime, and Sabre, and After Effects, and others.

I have never seen such great detail in my entire life. Knowing how long stuff like that takes did you guys ever go home to see your family or did you get to camp out at the studio for weeks at a time
Anyway having some knowledge with Renderman, were davy’s shaders pure RSL (Renderman Shading Language) coded, or were they created through Slim?
By any chance are you hiring for the next one
to ILM folks,
where can I get some Davey Jones wallpapers? and if there isnt any, will they be made available?
