CHARACTER-A-FORTNIGHT EVENT (CAFÉ)

Manifesto: The anatomy forum CAFÉ - a place to meet, share your concepts, ideas and work for the set brief, and then discuss them with like minded individuals (Bring your own coffee though...)

The purpose of this ongoing workshop series is to develop original character artwork in both 2D and 3D. A theme or brief will be given at the inception point of the workshop, and the project will be executed by the participants during a 2 week period. To have your own idea from the set brief, develop it in 2 dimensions and then execute it in 3 dimensions is very challenging, (especially within the time period,) and helps the artist to understand form “in the round.”

If you are thinking of taking your ideas into 3 dimensions, please decide on a suitable polygon budget (for games/TV/film or as much as your computer can handle!) If you are unsure, please enquire on the workshop and others will try and help. The workshop is application independent, and so anyone can try it. For those of you who would like to try 3d but do not have a package, blender ([http://www.blender3d.org/](http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Home.2.0.html) ) is a very high standard open source 3d application that is free to download and use. However, this will take time to learn.

     Duration of projects: 2 Weeks.

Breakdown: (guidelines only – depends on the complexity of the idea and model.)

Concept development and realization - 1 week.*

Model development and texture art - 1 week.*

     * You can split up your time however you wish - to reflect the area that you want to work in the most, for example.

The above guidelines are intensive and will require a lot of work. Please look at the amount of time you have available for each project before trying to take on too much. Quality artwork and developing your creative problem solving skills are key here, along with learning how others handled the same brief in conceptual and technical terms.

     DELIVERABLES:

These are guidelines only. You can do all the sections or just choose the areas you feel most comfortable with. If you wish to use another persons concept art for a model, then please seek permission to do so from the user. If you just want to create the concept art and don’t mind others using your art work for a fully realized character, please state so in your post. If you are having trouble with an area, please shout up and others will try to help out as best they can.

WIP is encouraged, and please help others by providing your thoughts on their solutions in a positive manner. Discouragement of others will not help anyone as we are all here to get better, and people bring different skills to the table.

     1. Work created here MUST be ORIGINAL TO THE CREATOR and for the purpose of serious study of character art and design. Those who post silly or off topic work will have their posts deleted immediately and will no longer be allowed to post on this thread. Rebecca Kimmel reserves the right to determine which pieces are considered to be in poor taste and / or disrespectful in the workshop.

     2. This Workshop will run in 2 WEEK slots.

     3. There is NO LIMIT to the NUMBER of posts an artist may make. However, we ask that you post only work which you feel best represents your ideas and important design points you feel others should know about during your character development, even if it is considered unfinished.

     4. Artists who post comments and critiques of other artists' work on this thread must be RESPECTFUL, POLITE, and offer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Flaming will be NOT be tolerated, and constitutes dismissal from this and other threads.

     5. Mike/default.rol and Rebecca Kimmel will be offering the occasional comments / critique ~ however, the main focus of the Workshop should be on Group Critique and interaction.

     6. ANY MEDIUM or STYLE may be used: Traditional or Digital Drawing or Painting, Sculpture, or 3D Model / Render for the initial stages. Development beyond the initial character idea (stage 2) should be done in a 3D application of your choice.

     7. Please limit the SIZE of your POSTS to 800 pixels WIDTH x Appropriate pixel LENGTH. No huge posts, please! (you are welcome to offer remote links to high resolution versions of your art work along side images that are of an appropriate size, if you so wish.)

     8. Have fun, enjoy, and create great art!

For those of you slightly confused by the terminology, a fortnight is 14 nights in duration. Here is a definition of it from Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortnight

A fortnight is a unit of time equal to two weeks: that is 14 days, or literally 14 nights. The term is common in the British Isles and many Commonwealth countries, but rarely used in the United States. It derives from the Old English feowertiene niht, meaning “fourteen nights”.

Im in! Anything to get me drawing!

I could go all out traditional medium with this one, I do not know yet (i feel the digital medium has made me lazy/careless of drawing lately).

I will make lots of thumbnails instead of falling flat on my face with a shoddy design. For this one my goals is to try and improve with my anatomy, so lots of referances I will use.

#4

Man…

I AM BUSY!

Don’t go posting these cool ideas all the time…

#5

Im pretty busy as well but I reckon I can spare 1 or 2 afternoons!

good luck fellas!

#6

i know i’m always saying this but i will REALLY, REALLY do my best for this one

#7

Cooool,
This is my design for my character
had fun with this, maybe ill go make this in 3d i dunno.
Busted this out over the duration of little miss sunshine, great movie.

#8

I am in too…^ ^…

my concept will be a guy…thin…short…homesexual…and…uses an umbrella as weapon…
cause for me…a person that really has great ability is someone that doesnt put the words " I am great " in front of him/her all the time, but show he/she is great when needed…and so as a real kung-fu master…

I will straight away move to modelling part like the past…cause no scanner…P…

hmm…1 question…what is the lowest polygon count to create a animate-able human model ??? I don;t know wether is’t different in different 3d software…but I am using Maya…

thanks…

depleteD - dude, that’s a cool design. i’m also thinking of doing a female character. a nice sexy but extremely deadly chick! ROCKS DUDE!! can’t wait to see your character worked out more.

Morning all,

Hello and welcome to the latest CAFE. This event should be great fun! My participation will be a bit sporadic over the next two weeks as I’m currently house hunting in London with my girlfriend, and so will be spending a long time away from my own computer - I doubt I’ll be doing any 3D for this round… though I want to so bad.

@ Fl3wk >>> Good to see you motivated to draw again. On the ANATOMY front, clear your diary for 2 weeks from the 23rd June, the next workshop is going to be a crash course in it and therefore right up your street.

@ Mu >>> Hey, I’m glad to see you are still about. you did really cool on the first CAFE, and I hope to see you back for future events when you get some time.

@ SpaceTik >>> We’re all pretty busy, but your participation will be welcome as always. I look forward to see what you make of this brief.

@ michael-olszak >>> Great stuff! Bring it on, we love to see your work here.

@ depleteD >>> Great start for your female master. What are your plans for her now?

@ questionmarks >>> Can’t wait to see what you produce this time. You’ve done some pretty cool stuff in the previous rounds. As for a poly count for animation - it depends on what you plan on doing it for? Real time (i.e. game) or for a short animation etc. Game engines vary, but 6 thousand tri’s is a sensible figure I’ve been told, and for animations you can use a low poly proxy to animate with and then show the high poly mesh at render time. There are other ways too. Go with what you feel your machine could handle in other 3D programs you’ve used is my best advice, I presume you don’t have a render farm handy… LOL.

Cheers all
MIKE

Hey Mike,

just so you know… when I participated in the first Cafe I stumbled over so many things I couldn’t do (but which I kind of felt I needed for the result I wanted) that I instantly set to work on those things… namely 3D in general and environments plus setting up characters in an environment.

that lead me to starting to learn Blender and take part in the Environment Support Group. You could say I am training to make my next participation more of a success, lol.

#12

Hey Mu,

Well I think your participation in the next CAFE will be a very good investment in your time, if you can’t particiapte in this one. Clear your diary from the 23rd for 2 weeks is all I will suggest.

Cheers
MIKE

Default-Sol: I have already started on some marker thumbnails. Working out the silhuette to see what looks interesting, no detail what so ever. Still unfinished, it might be photographed and tweaked and then shown (A3 paper, plus my camera is DA BOMB). I have been struggling to keep away from anyone pointy and sharp, lets see how it goes

I have plenty of time so I will certain join that anatomy workshop when it starts!

depleteD: Great design! It may need a little more character as right now it seems like just a girl in a night robe. Also as a crit, the head seems too large, so if you were trying to get the anatomy spot on, this is where you need to fix. With the head, it makes her seem young, about 13.

Default - Wow, how nice this theme  I’m very curious to see what’s coming from it.
I’m not busy like before… I’m twice busy now lol Have to deliver so much work this next two weeks, but I’ll look for a sketch at least for this one
Thanks for keeping this up and people motivated  Even for those not participating it’s nice to follow up the artworks in progress and post some C&C.

Michael - mmmmm, very curious here… what are you going to produce?

DepleteD - wow, great start

MU - you’re right, themes are so cool all the time. hope you find some time to participate too.

Everybody - keep it up  Good luck and have a nice Café

#15

had start in Maya (no access to c4d at moment)

#16

Thats a cool concept depleteD,female warriors are difficult. To make a girl look
attractive and dangerous is tricky.

Interesting proportions Murfdog, looking forward to see more.

This is my concept of a Kung Fu master, inspired by Jet Li. Dont think ill take it much
further instead start modeling and see how it develops.

#17

…don’t know if i’m better off for it, still i like cinema alot

#18

Djampa - Just wait man. I’ll try to come up with something fearse man!!
Murfdog - Nice start, keep molding it. It’s gonna be great dude!
xioncajou - can’t wait dude

I’ll post my sketches at the end of the week somewhere. Keep working it guys, i feel this is gonna be a nice one!!

#19

made a start… as the name says, hes a little ninja from a very dense planet.

lol… ok I havent got a theme yet!

fun

Hi,

young Mi is only five years old, but having explored taijiquan for more than five lives, remembrance is strong in him…

…luckily we can now witness the moment at which enlightenment strikes him, while the training of decades lets the little master become one with body and mind…

and now I am out of here… you hear me!?
