The carnivorous sundew fairy

Ears, some hair and the first stage of the skin…

#25

Amazing work - can’t wait to see this one finished in the gallery.

#26

Wow, really coming along nice. I love those very real seeming details. Can’t wait to see the end result.

I love how the skin texture is duplicated in miniature in the eye as well. Did you draw the skin texture on a seperate layer? It looks so real I could swear the texture was from a photo…but you’re good enough that it’s probably drawn and layered over it, right?

Also I wanted to maybe suggest not leaving a gap between the lips because I know at least I purse my lips tighter the more pissed off I am. If she’s being a jerk she’d probably have her lips set together somewhat. Having the mouth partially open seems to me more of an innocent/childlike expression.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments

If there’s one thing I’ve learned during this project than it’s to more carefully work out the idea and think everything over. I didn’t do that. I started this painting much unprepared, I mean I had an idea and after some sketching I just started. So, ever so often I get carried away when I’m applying a newly discovered( well to me  ) effect to a part of the painting And then I’m forgetting that that part is also a piece of a larger scene/painting.

You’re right she isn’t cute or bitchy anymore; I think I’ll just change the story about the sundew fairy a bit  Also, while working on this painting I wondered why did i give her these sundew tentacles on her head as well as a mouth for feeding?..(help)

The texture was made by painting ( with the aid of a photo reference…) a small part with spots etc… in several sizes. Then clone/stamped/g.blurred and sometimes enlarged it a bit until I had a large piece of texture (fitted together (planning the layout to roughly fit the form and structure of the face) and sculpted it on one half of the face with the aid of the cs2- liquid plug-in. When half of the face was done i copied and flipped it to fit the other half of the face aswell, adding a little deformation and a little more painting to make some corrections…

And the skin is still not finished yet, so no update picture tonight…

Changing the story’s fine with me! Go for it. I think she has a mouth for talking/breathing, and tentacles for eating. So I guess that’d mean her mouth would be specialized only for air passage (no saliva, mucus instead, no swallowing reflex, no teeth…and maybe not even a tongue. Except she might need something similar for speech). This would mean though that she doesn’t need both a mouth and a nose. She should have sweet breath too - to attract more insects. Sorry - that’s the biologist in me speaking. Fairy’s are magical so they don’t have to be scientifically accurate.
Thanks for letting us in on your skin technique!

Thanks Vizon for helping me out. I now feel a lot better about her

And your idea of her having a sweet breath appeals very much to me. Too bad i cannot implement such a feature  . But who knows, maybe one day…

#31

Did some work on the hair & skin (far from ready…)

#32

Amazing. Like the direction it has taken. Is great to see the progression of an idea. Very inspiring work.

Great work.

#36

Yeah! its a carnivourous sundew fairy update! I have been following this thread and I really love your style! it is so realistic and awsome. Can’t wait to see it finished.

Looking magnificent, Arty! Coming along like the Masterpiece it is. I am sure that the creases/cracks running across her face are intentional, but you are aware that they do give a Frankenstein/scar-like impression, right (particularly since she’s green)? Just want to make sure that’s your intent. It certainly gives her character! One thing about leaves I’ve noticed is that their veins seem symmetrical most of the time, running out from the stem (like smaller and smaller pipes all originating from a water vein…which I guess is what it is…) But I’ll wager her veins are internal like a person’s…so maybe that doesn’t apply. Well, it’s beautiful no matter what. Keep at it!

#38

EESH! It’s been a while since I have been able to look in on this one. It’s coming along beautifully!
Can’t wait to see more. :bounce:
Hope all is well!
