Ironic that this thread only has 2 stars …it’s something that bugs me quite a bit though, knowing that there’s all those trolls out there.
the accursed one star voters
I think the two stars is just irony in this case rather than trolls.
Some really cool ideas in here, I’d love to hear some mods weigh in on their thoughts of them.
I like the mandatory critique idea.
Would it help if the rating system was percentage based instead?
Basically the voter chooses thumbs up, or thumbs down.
And the stars are based on the percentage of voters who like the piece.
For example a gallery image gets 10 votes total, with 6 thumbs up votes,
and gets rated 3 stars.
The scores could be:
0% - 20% 1 stars
21% - 40% 2 stars
41% - 60% 3 stars
61% - 80% 4 stars
81% - 100% 5 stars
the problem i think with the system is that it can be exploited by people in general. everyone can register in and cast a vote. the voting system works as a double edged sword. i gives motivation to continue or brings u down hard.
so my proposal is this, keep the voting system but drop down the access to it. what i mean by that is to give the voting previledges to people that can handle its serious nature. people how have already recieved a cgchoise award, as well as moderators and people part of the cgsociety. this group of people , i believe, have the understanding of the amount of work been done in the individual project and with a reply together with the motivation of the star count can give invaluable feedback to the artist and make him work better in the next project.

[/i]Why cast a negative vote? Someone mentioned the word “contraproductive” and I have to agree. I dont post here to show off, its never landed me any other things than some fun online contacts to post here. I post here to become better, I want peoples constructive ideas and crits. By beeing able to vote positive or negative in combination with a comment, the trolls will only write “oh well that part sucked” putting someone down…
Reward the great work with a recommendation, help the rest with constructive critics.
great idea for opening this topic, neb.even though im not frequent here, i like to take a look at sobody elses works and wote. if it think its not really good i just dont vote…and it brings me down when i see that sombody worked hard on the piece, and that it turned out great…why lower the vote… its quite annoying…
I feel the star rating is hardly accurate, but I will admit that it does tend to get my attention when I’m cruising the forums. I’ve only rated threads a couple times because of some really outstanding work that I felt was 4 star, and would never even consider giving a one star rating to someone’s posted work if I thought it was bad - That’s cruel and unusual.
I have seen the opposite case as well, where someone, in my opinion, has completely overrated someones thread - giving them four stars when I felt it wasn’t even close.
I don’t know if that is a case of someone having lots of friends, or simply, a matter of taste, but I choose not to challenge that rating as some do, since it’s not worth hurting someone’s feelings over a difference of opinion.
Honestly, I don’t even know how many votes it takes to get a certain rating to stick; one, two, three or more. Anyone know?

i dont know…i think at least 5…
Ok, why not just get rid of the Stars for only the Gallery sections? I think that’s all there is too it at this point.
It doesn’t rank the overall appeal of artwork, it just guides straight-minded folk into viewing only those threads, IMHO. And as for the “accursed one-star voters”, it solves that problem too.
I think for the Galleries, the stars take away from what people should really be doing to express their feelings: commenting and giving critiques.
