I’m confused:shrug:I rate this thread one star for well, er,pissing me off.
the accursed one star voters
Hehe you guys ^
So whats the actual mod feedback on this then? Is there anything they may consider implementing? I especially like Alice’s idea of the optional putting your piece forward for rating.
I think of it in terms of an average; that is, if I see a work rated five stars that I think deserves three stars, I’ll give it one star.
Someone might have already said this though. Besides, the star system seems to work OK in my opinion. The best works usually have the most stars…'nuff said.
Unfortunately this logic is what’s wrong with the star system. If you think that the work deserves 3 stars, you should give it 3 stars. By giving it one star you know that you will pull down the average more, such that it is closer to YOUR OPINION of the deserved rating. In essence your vote has more weight than other people’s votes. This is contrary to democracy, or in other words contrary to a properly functioning rating system (where the rating is the average of all honest opinions). In other words still, you are taking unfair advantage of other members of the forum that rated the work according to their honest opinion of it.
As such I like the idea of giving a “point” towards nomination. If you like the piece you contribute by nominating. If you don’t like it, then you don’t have the power to pull other viewer’s opinions down, but you can choose not to contribute to nomination. If a piece hits say 1000 nominations, then enough people think it’s nomination worthy, such that it consequently gets its deserved due.
Edit: That’s why as it is right now, the star system is pretty useless. Hence I’d recommend going by either # of replies or # of views that a piece has been getting.
Ehm…not to be an idiot here, but why wouldn’t you just give it tree stars? Seems kinda stupid when you think bout it. Doesn’t it? Egocentric and counterproductive.
When voting you’re just saying what score YOU thinks it should have. Not what average
it SHOULD have. Thats for “the masses” to decide.
/Dodges out again not to be seen in this thread again.
I haven’t read past the first page yet, but I just thought I’d say that this cracked me up. =)
I was just about to write about the same thing concerning 1 star rating as you ShadowHunter, couldnt agree more. For you who give 1 star rating to make the average show YOUR opinion and destroy the societys rating, read ShadowHunter’s post above and try to understand that you are the reason everyone in this thread is “upset”…
Its very important for me that other people than me appriciate my art, in fact if you are the only one enjoying your art, then how can you ever think you have a chance of making a living from it(at least thats my dream in a way or another). Of course the most important thing is that you appriciate what you are doing. But doesnt it make you enjoy it even more when you can share with others and get response from other people that relate to your art.
I think many artist would benifit from a fare rating system, since what the public think is in many aspects important.
I think you should only be given the option to vote when you reply to a thread and the rating should be attached to your post. If someone would still be an ass and give me a 1 star for a work that deserved 4 with a lousy explaination i wouldnt give a damn… In that case i know his/her opinion doesnt mean a thing.
And how to put art on a scale? Well thats up to each and everyone, if you were only given the option to rate when posting then it would be more clear… You’ll get a much better understanding of from where you got your stars… If its from the style, colors etc would be in many cases explained by the post next to the stars…
Oh i just had another idea!
The rating could only be visible to the artist and the number of views will speak for itself in terms of making ppl find the thread… That way we get rid of the “equalizing”…
right now, each time someone gives it a 4 or 5 star rating they are nominating it for consideration to the mods …
the 1,2 & 3 stars are only away to eradicate the nominations of others
XXXXXXXXXXX
make it nominations only … make the count hidden … maybe a star to show it has been nominated by others
a piece getting X views + Y nominations is passed to mods for consideration
hahaha this threasd has becomw real interesting. i posted a work few days ago just to follow up on this thread and followed the ratings…it was really fun looking at the rates going down…we have a noce number of those… “equalisers” on the forums…i actually got 4 times one star and no replies explaining their ratings…but then i thaught, aawww…waiit im workin in comics industry and im pretty skillfull im perfectly happy in life…what to say to those people…xcept nyanyanyanyanyaaaa…i aam succesfuuul ,my skiils are gettin paaaiiid…u can downrate mee but im still gettin…ehrm…well…annnyways nothing like a mature response
now to the serious side there are some serious artists here promoting their works here, and they are trying to break into the industry by doing this. this is a professional site and people doing this should be ashamed, cause its unobjective and serves no purpose exceps to display petty jealousy. i m not familiar with creating internet sites…but , is it too difficult to create that mandatory reply on the vote? in my opinion thet would help alot and those giving arguments that are just plain gibberish to accompany their votes can be penalised
it’s simple, it should show who gave you how many stars. Then you could pm this person and ask why.
Well I’m not sure I myself agree with my own statement as mediocrity wasn’t the word I was looking for but uh, yeah lol.
I guess what I originally meant in relation with the article was that in todays world it seems more and more like people don’t respect great artists and act jealously towards them rather than looking up to them. Some people rate a masterpiece of artwork down because they are simply so jealous, makes me kinda sick. My generation sadly has been raised in a cuddling way where every person is taught “they are each special and great and important and the bestest”, then they discover someone has created something even more impressive and suddenly now they are jealous because nobody should be better and if they are they hate te other person… nevermind me though, I always look too deeply into these discussions, always tend to go borderline OT.
Please continue the thread about star ratings:thumbsup:
Hm
Personally, I very much like the idea of ‘nominating’ a piece for the choice gallery, it seems less like a fanatic popularity contest.
However, I can’t say that the voting bothers me much. I always get my share of people who vote the thread down, but, I mean
we’re talking little golden stars, here, on an online forum - that really say very little about the actual picture. With people voting not because of how they actually feel about the pieces, but often how they feel about the person - and sometimes just to raise or lower the score, for a friend or ‘enemy’. I can’t bring myself to caring more than with a shrug now and then.
[edit] Annoying font, fixing it.
Yeah, I think I’m going to add my vote to those who think an image should be nominated for the cg_choice award.
At the end of the day, the award is at the discretion of mods - which takes away the community aspect of what we’re doing.
Hmmm, Linda, for people who get an award on every other work they post and get 5 stars on everything they do, it’s kinda trivial to get those stars I’m sure… but I only have gotten stars once and since I hardly ever get the chance to create a finished work, working on that, but I’m sure it will take a while before something I post will get stars again… So those stars can be really really motivating… especially when you don’t get them as much. I know it’s trivial and they don’t mean much, but for someone as insecure as me, it’s pure motivation… or demotivation and a wake-up call… which can be a good think, although, thinking about it… posting something now will probably scare the sh** out of me yikes
I think it’s fine as it is, if there’s people who degrade the stuff you post, it will still level at 4-5 stars if everyone else likes it… if you get 1 star… you posted one crappy piece or you pissed off the entire world
Don’t think it should be changed…
Edit started to wonder if I had gotten stars on my last work so I checked, so make that “only twice” wheee! See, feeling happy right away… Back to work YEEEY! (sigh)
Yes it is true Linda that the current rating system is only “little golden stars”… But if we were to improve the system so that it reflects the actual opinion of the society it would be of great value to many artists! Maybe this doesnt apply to you as you probably are very confident and aware of the quality of your work(you should :p)… But for other artists like myself its important to recieve some kind of confirmation to keep going… With or without it i will always keep drawing/painting but im in the position where im about to chose an education for myself and not really sure if i got what it takes to develope into a high standard artist. If the rating system would work in a more justifying manner it would be of much greater worth to me and probably many others… I just posted my first work on the internet on this site and recieved 3 stars :), i was pleased only by the fact that people took the time to rate it.
“With people voting not because of how they actually feel about the pieces, but often how they feel about the person - and sometimes just to raise or lower the score, for a friend or ‘enemy’”
If the rating would only be an option when accompanied by a reply this kind of behavior could easily be recognised and ignored…
I like the idea of having to leave a comment before you can vote and ur vote being visible to other members.
I also like the idea of nominating art works into the cg choice gallery.
ummm I try not to pay too much attention to the ‘stars’. The good thing about them is they grab people’s attention, so they look and comment on your work, it’s just unfair when other work is overlooked if it doesn’t have any stars…
