the accursed one star voters

#41

So when I post a chrome sphere on a checkered floor with a lensflare, its going to be voted “good”? If people want to be told every piece of junk they make is awesome, then they have renderosity for that. Im all for encouraging new artists, but if I’d been told my early works were great, then I’d have sat back and relaxed with the assumption that im one of the big boys now.

I would agree on adding a mandatory 1-liner review with each star vote though, so at least those who try to bring something down will have to give a reason.

Yeah I find it mean. Its really pointless just to give 1 star to good work just for jelously. If people dont feel that its 5 star material they should rate it appropiately. Giving one star to good work makes no sense. If someone things the work is good but could be better give it 4 stars or if they think its nice but not great give it 3. Giving amazing art 1 star just to make it difficult to reach 5 star overall rating is just mean spirited in my opinion. :argh: No worries usually mean people spend too much time being mean to achieve greatness. I believe in what goes around comes around and you get in life what you give back.

I think it is stupid to be jelous (i mean real jelous) of peoples work, instead as artsits peopel should admire those who have mastered those skills and try to learn from it and have something to achieve. :arteest:

Oh well, I wouldnt worry too much about the star system… people can tell good work and it it has 5, 2, 1 or no stars it shouldnt make a difference.

Ppl have diferent values so they admire diferent works , I hate to see a perfect car model if the guy didnt design it , its just a copy but is always with 4-5 stars cause it is a perfect boring copy with HDRI , same with 2d paints , some are like drawing over pictures and I hate but some ppl love, some paints are simpler but very creative I love it and they have no stars.

If you head over to www.goodbrush.com you’ll see that Craig Mullins has an average of 2/5 rating in all his pictures!!! And a lot of times these talentless Trolls even bother to comment on his works!
I guess you get to know who the sincere posters are over time, maybe it’s the only way to get meaningful critique…

#45

thats so true, and it is so annoying and humiliating seing works of high quality being degraded like that

#46

oh my God some are at 1.6 now
see what I mean, if you get rid of anonimicity still doesn’t solve the problem. Some of the comments there are absurd and immature.

You have to take it for what it is. Some 3D is supposed to be that way simply cause all Computer Graphics aint Computer Graphics Art. A lot of people make a living out of making theese pictures for the industry and its a good thing to have in your portfolio. So if the task is to make a perfect nice render of a specified carmodell then it deserves a good rating if its a a perfect nice render of that car. Also, people who give such pictures high ratings prolly do it cause they know how mindboggling booring it can be to sit for days with all those small details that isnt quite right. :stuck_out_tongue:

You cant always make artistic versions of everything, especially not with subjects that often are made for technical portfolios or ads etc. I’m one of them who wouldnt want to see those works dissapearing of the boards in a strife to make all things “artsy”.

I’m sorry if my english sounds a bit weird…

#48

Alice - My english is weird :argh:

I was just saying that is normal do not agree with the rating cause we all are diferent and wont like the same things, I got your point and I love your works

#49

I guess so people have insanely high standards :argh:??

#50

oki… and erm… thankyou
(Hope It didnt come of as I was on a rant. )

#51

So whjy aren’t people saying whether they like the median system or not?

#52

Oh… Don’t like it.
Its discouraging to get lower “grades” on your newer work than on the old ones when you know you have made something better. I rather have a mark that you check if you want the picture to be nominated for the gallery. Enough nominations and it will be considdered. (Maybe one to three stars on how many have nominated the picture?) If you have something bad to say, say it in a comment as a constructive critisism.

There you go

#53

I think thats a great idea. Fair enough for other pieces you can ignore the star ratings, but for your own work you really would take notice whether you wanted to or not, it’d be nice to have the option there. I think the reason line is a good idea too.

#54

i have learned to ignore it. In the finished gallery there was an extremely awesome character done. it got 3 stars i think. you know what got 4 stars? a rendered glass of milk  It was a damn good render of a glass of milk, don’t get me wrong, but all that does is degrade the integrity(sp?) of the star system.

I think a prompt for a reply when giving a star would be a step in the right direction though.

#55

I second this! Best idea yet (better than mine) Who else is with me…erm…I mean Alice!

#56

I can’t help but think about that guardian.com article about the mediocrity of society and how people are quick to degrade things that are beyond their level of achievement.

That was a crap post.

#58

agreeing w/ Alice

nominate entries for consideration … who cares about stars

Why not just get rid of the star system for at least the CGChoice gallery? They’re in there for a reason… I personally like the star system in general because it allows me to quickly glance through the finished works to find things worth clicking on. Sometimes I’m in a rush but just want to take a quick peek at some inspiring work.

And don’t hate me for this, but sometimes I give a one star rating on work I think were only given 5 stars because the submitter and his friends gave it 5 stars… Sometimes work is just so sub-par and just doesn’t deserve the number of stars it has. So I try to even it out. I’ve never posted a rating on CG choice gallery because what’s the point?

#60

Well, then you are the problem.

What if I honestly like my work?
What if my friend honestly likes my work?
Just so people like you can dishonestly rate it below what you normally would, because you thought it needed to be “evened out”.

It’s one thing to not like something and rate it low, but by god, rate it what you honestly think it should be. Trying to even things out is what totally trashes the rating system.
