Texturing Models

#1

Okay, from what I’ve seen everyone uses one image for their textures on their objects…So… How do you use one image for these complex models or even simple models? :\ I don’t get how I can texture objects with one image file…

Thanks in advanced,

This part is called UV-mapping and kind of tells the polygons which parts of the texture they have to use. There are enough tutorials around here, that explain the technniques for doing that.

I am not an expert in UV mapping and I understand why you find texturing from one file confusing. Just think of it like this.

Say you have a box with all its sides. Now if you were to texture each side a different color you wouldnt have to make a separate file for each side. Instead what UV does is it unwraps the box so its no longer 3d but a flat 2D object. UV just lets you know where each specific part goes, so you know what square of the box you are painting in say Photoshop. When you go back to the 3D software the painting wraps around the 3d model but since it has to match the points from the UV of the 2d with the 3d it falls exactly where it needs to go.

I made you a quick and dirty visual of what I am taking about The cube (there is 2 to show the front/top and back/bottom but its the same cube). Instead of selecting each face and assigning a color you can UV map it that means open up the cube so that it is flat and bring it to photoshop to paint. Then your entire cube would be colored with only one file.

I hope that helps you understand it a little and not confused you any further.
