texture/light/render - character & environment - puddlefish

I’m definitely in for this one. Hope all you other 2D artists are too. We pestered the moderators enough for this forum, so we better make good use of it!!

I’m going to do a demon type of thingy in it’s environment (I’m thinking of a swamp) from an original concept design.

Early concepts will be up shortly.

Good luck to everyone!

Ok, here’s an initial design. Kind of a big mantis with a dinosaur head type thingy. The rear ‘leg’ is a tail of sorts that protrudes from the middle back and is used for a single rear leg when not moving fast. To run, it propells the body up so that it’s arms can act as it’s front legs and the two short ones as hind legs. The tail then acts as a balance.

All clear?

He will be posed and placed in a environment before any heavy painting work is done.

Anyway, crits welcome!

PS: Will be painted in Photoshop 6.0 with a Wacom.

#4

He he…interesting! Are you going to base your final pic on that pose?

#5

No, this is just a design sketch to figure out proportions, mechanics etc. I think he’ll probably be running in the final painting, I have to do a similar sketch to this for that position before I start painting, just to make sure it looks (mildly) believable.

That is one scary looking critter. I like your detail work and use of crosshatching… Very cool. Looking forward to seeing more.

:bounce: Dude!
Making such a great sketch for “proportions, mechanics etc.” is way beyond me… You are my hero!

The design looks like the bugs in Starship Troopers with a twist…

I’m going to post an update tomorrow, of the running pose and probably with a slightly altered head ( a little too tricaratops at the moment ). After that it’s into composition in the environment.
In reterospect, maybe a swamp scene wouldn’t suit him, those pincer legs probably wouldn’t be too practical, maybe a forest? Seems like he could maybe climb trees pretty easy.
Anyway, let me know what your thoughts are, and thanks for the comments!!

Nice work
I like the design…really original creature, and it’s method of locomotion is interesting. Can’t wait to see more.

great design, but i think the head doesn’t really go with the body, just because i’m used to seeing it as dino i guess…

#11

Ok, a bit behind schedule, but here’s an updated design.
The direction of of the small rear legs’ knee joint has been reversed (this makes much more sense when he is in his moving/running pose), and the head has been altered (let’s hear those comments!).
Tomorrow (promise!) I’ll have a sketch of the moving/running position and hopefully a rough idea of environment.
Crits welcome as always!

#12

Gotta redo that head. Too much like an elephant!! (damn it’s late :o)

#13

god… how some people can draw so good !!!

not patient to see the final one
excellent work

#14

Ok, here’s a (very rushed and messy) sketch of him in his running/moving position. The final painting will probably be closer to this pose, but a little more dramatic. I was thinking of having two of them fight?
On second glance, I think I kinda like the head, and once you view him at 3/4 view, as opposed to portrait, it loses some (but not all) of its elephant look, given the dual feelers.
As always, crits welcome.

#15

 Nice going.I really like what you’ve done with the muscles and skin. Interesting bone structure.I thing that you should give it a pose with greater use of perspective…well waiting to see the progress:thumbsup:

#16

:bounce: Great :bounce:

Really nice drawings. Looking forward to see the painting.

#17

yeah like your character, can’t wait to see him with color! i agree with Cgkoko, try a more angled view to get better perspective

#18

Thanks for the comments guys.

Cgkoko & System404: These are still just proportion and design sketches, the final composition will of course be more dramatic.
When I said that the last sketch would be closer to the painting, I meant that he would probably be on his four legs in a more active position, as oppossed to the first two sketches where he’s in his ‘staying still but using his arms’ position.
I’m thinking of having two of them fighting in a swampy environment, maybe with one clinging to a big tree with those claws.
Any thoughts?

#19

Once again I’m running behind schedule!! Dammit!!
Ok, I absolutely PROMISE (for real this time) to have my compositional sketch done and dusted tomorrow. Then it’s into the painting itself over the weekend.
Later

I’m impressed! Question: How are you making such drastic changes to your image and keeping it so clean? Are you drawing on paper or on a digital art pad? Just wondering. Excellent design. Great style… I think your scene idea sounds really cool. I’d like to see some carnage in a scene with animals like that. Good job!

(2 thumbs up)
