Interested here, trying to practice texturing more and more.
::Texture Challenge July2007::
Sorry for not having posted anything yet, I’ll have a few days free coming up starting Wednesday. I’ll probably post the actual UV layout first to get feedback (since I hate doing those), and then do some color map work.
Likewise, I’ve been killing my freetime UV’ing the first building. I think I may work on the buildings one at a time, so I hope to post the UV layout for the first building sometime soon.
Man its nice finally getting some texturing work in
Sitting here unwrapping it. Man that model could do with some tidying up. Not exactly the one-solid-mesh-no-overlapping-or-hidden-faces school of thought my old school games modelling teacher used to preach.
Anyway, just to clarify. Is it one 2048 map for each of the two buildings or one for all it?
Hi, i saw this project and was amazed by it’s size. I’d like to become a small part of this project, so i took a scene and textured one of the buildings. Now i need a textures link to start texturing it.

p.s. excuse me for my english.
Nice to see you guys hammering away at this. :wip:
marque-pierre- You can use a 2048x2048 for each building.
romullus-You’ll have to go in your user control panel and turn on your allow PMs or send me your email for the texture pack link.
*Would be happy to have you and any others that are interested join the texture team for Minas Tirith’s 100’s of buildings :buttrock:
Sorry, i do not have permission to use personal mesaging system yet (probably because i’m newbie in this forum), so there’s my email: romullus3d[@]gmail.com (you have to remove brackets)
[left]Yes, i’ve got email and downloaded textures. Thanks softdistortion. But before i start to texture i went to the internet for reference hunting, and to my surprise i found almost nothing much useful. Then i went to www.minastirithproject.com references section and found there only thumbnails. I’m gonna watch my return of the king dvd, of course, but it’ll be a nice to have a better quality still images. Any sugestions?

Here’s a sample of what MT’s team leaders liked so far.

Most pics from the movie are quite white/light gray, but the team’s leads are wanting warmer color and more variety, so keep that in mind when looking at the white city refs.>
LOTR

Stumbled on this a bit late.
Pity, I need an exercise to structure my textures learning around.
I want to take a sawed-off shotgun and shoot myself. Sorry, but are there any more efficient ways to lay out UVs then spending hours doing this insane task? Maya’s transfer tool seems to be unstable resulting in screwed up edge coordinates and some of the other UV tools seem to not keep pieces in scale to each other which is really annoying.
I said I’d post some progress, so here it is. In no way am I finished, but I need to take a break from this.

You could try this http://www.pullin-shapes.co.uk/ , but Maya UV should work fine once you figure it out.
Hi, bad news from me this time. Unplanned works falled on me, so i will have no free time at least till september. I can only offer fully uvmaped building as my apology for those who hate uvmaping. If you interested, just let me know and i put max scene or obj file on hosting site to download.
It’s far from perfect, i know, but with a little tweak this should be good eough to start texturing.

I really sorry.
Looking good guys!
Sorry to hear you have to drop out for now romullus.
Thanks for donating your work to the rest (nice UV coverage) …great collaborative spirit ![]()
How are the rest of you guys doing?? Chime in and lets hear/see how it’s going.
Thanks for that link, Softdistortion, I glanced over it quickly and I’ll take a more indepth look when on break.
Sorry you won’t be able to finish, Romullus! As for hating to mess around with UVs, yeah, I don’t like it, but it’s really something that I should try to do better at. It’ll be one more useful skill I’ll have developed, but thank you for the offer!
Okay, I looked through the Maya Help file and at least have a much better idea on how to effectively use the Automatic Mapping tool to cut down on time considerably (though I wound up re-laying out the UVs from the beginning). For the most part, the results are tremendously better than what I had been getting by trying to use the other projection techniques like Spherical, Cylindrical, etc.
That isn’ to say that there isn’t anything wrong with my map. I noticed on several occasions after using the Transfer Attributes tool, some meshes had their edges all warped and became an incoherent mess. Granted it’s simple to just clone the good mesh and replace the bad ones, but does anyone know what causes this?
Anyways, a picture of the model. Just some minor tweaks and I’ll start painting tomorrow.

Note that the areas in red indicated the messed up UVs.
