::Texture Challenge July2007::

#1

Ok peoples, HERE are the models as promised.

Anyone that would like to join in is free to do so.

Including 2 models in one OBJ.zip file, you can decide which you are comfortable with.

The model’s polys are NOT optimised, so save your breath telling me about that.

**Post here to let me know if you are taking part so I can get you a texture pack link !
HERE’s a taste of what they look like

Rules of engagement>

-Please try to do a logical UV layout over cramming every square micrometer of space.

-Do anything you like to the model as long as your final textured model has the same shape as the original, so slice dice, clone away.

-You are responsible to put the model back at it’s original position and orientation.

-One 2048x2048 texture sheet per channel for as many channels as you want to create… Color ,Spec, Bump, etc. *Normalmaps are allowed as well.

-MT Reference Images are mostly available online…if you have a real problem finding them let me know.

-The best texture will be decided by the MinasTirith project team

Any questions, feel free to contact me @ my email or PM here at CGS

This is not meant to infringe on any future CGS sanctioned Texture challenges

So good to see man! Count me in. Can’t wait to get started!

#3

you know what? What the hell. Even though texturing isn’t my strongest point, I need to do something that’s not modeling. I’m game.

#4

Cool to see this get off the ground. Sorry about the unoptimised models, I was young and naive at the time… I can’t wait to see what you guys do with them

#5

what is the deadline on this by the way?

#6

maje3d- Welcome aboard! Will keep your info for the texture pack link coing soon!

Synthesizer- So it was you that built this one?
No worries, I just mentioned it to avoid complaining that might start out if someone sees a problem with it.
PS: Hope all is going well with the new job.

marque-pierre- End of August sound like enough time ?

I don’t want to set a hard deadline, but soon as this one is done I’d like to do another invite to texture artists that want to join in on more buildings. It won’t be set as a challenge…but will promote more inter forum collaboration/team environment among texture artists that want to gain some experience working that way.

I think this is an important area to experience, especially if you are looking for work in the industry. Experience working co-operatively in a team setting is a crucial skill.

HERE’s another preview of the Italy shoot that will form the texture packs for these building texture invites.

#7

good to see a texturing challenge up & running

is usage of the texture packs a requirement?
…& is displacement okay to use?

#8

Stefan-Morrell- Using the pack is not a requirment, but a link to it will be provided for all the people taking part.

Displacement is fine for your display renders, but unfortunately it won’t be usable in the final 3D veiwer these buildings will be used in.

Great initiative sd!

Just a suggestion, if people want to do ivy, plants or other green stuff growing onto the walls, they should do it on a seperate plane with an alpha map. That way it could be easily reused.

And perhaps I missed a previous thread or discussion, but it might be good to post some details about the how and why of this whole thing.

Cheers.

#10

Is the style ought to be realistic or could it also be something lika a gothicfantasy thing etc…?

#11

Thanks, but hold the pat on the back till the dust settles.
