TELL US: Who are the BEST Comic Book/ Comic Strip Artists?

I am going to put another vote in for Jeff Smith. His linework is just stunning. I’m afraid I can’t vote for too much manga stuff as much the art seems very “samey”. I prefer indie comics where perhaps artists have more freedom to have an individual style vs an in-house style.

I have been reading The Complete Peanuts books, and all the interviews therein, and I have to agree with Sparky that not many comic strip artists are very good these days. I don’t read them any more as:

  1. Mosty aren’t funny
  2. The art is terrible.

(Dilbert and The Far Side get away with average art as the writing is great).

The last truly great strip I read was Calvin and Hobbes, and that was 10 years ago!

One of my favorites has always been Vaugh Bode, creator of the Cheech Wizard as well as his son Mark their characters have become icons in graffiti /Pop culture.

I’d buy anything by either of them. I even have the Bad Art Collection. o_o;
Hmm…

James O’Barr? The Crow started off kinda wonky, and I didn’t like the art at first, but it got a hell of a lot better towards the end. I even started liking the style…

“El Corto Maltes” by Hugo Pratt. I hope some day will be a complete edition of this series. This Comic run in the 70’s in South America.

WOW!! after seeing the link, Rob Liefeld is the Ashlee Simpson of the comicbooks world. Looking at the drawings comparison, saying he copied is too kind. It looked more like tracing than copying.

Favourite: The cover of Wolverine issue 79
That was the first time in high school I ever picked up a comic and thought “wow! what’s going on?”
The cover showed wolverine kneeling on the ground screaming, the claws from his right hand lying broken on the floor. I read the comic till that story ended (issue 90 i think) and haven’t picked up a comic since. I could only find an image of the cover on issue 90 (which wasn’t done by adam kubert but it’s cool):

Alex Ross!
His work on Kindom Come was amazing, and it still blows me away everytime i open it.

I love Adam hughes line work. Great style with the thick outlines, yet the details come out so perfectly.

please someone tell me geof darrow (hard Boiled, City of fire, Burbon threat, Big Guy) is included in this list because I am sorry you dont get much better then that. Also John Foster who is one hell of a artist.
