Guys, sorry to keep banging on about it but does anyone else get pretty bad ping when they play? I see a lot of players with 40-50 ping but I still seem to be getting around 200-300, even though my net connection is super fast when Iām surfing web pages. Not downloading anything either, still no clue about whatās happeningā¦have posted a thread on the steam forums about it anyway. Would appreciate any advice, thanks
Torcharts: Hereās how to search for a server with a low ping: In your TF2 home screen, press the āBrowseā button instead of āStart Playingā. This will open the Server Browser. From here you can just sort by latency, but to guarantee good ping click the āChange Filtersā button at the bottom of that window. From there, change the āLatencyā to ā<50ā and select the āServer not fullā, āHas users playingā and āIs not password protectedā boxes. Now look at the list and find a server you like. You can either double-click the entry or right click on it and select āConnect to Serverā to connect and start playing.
If youāre using the automatic āStart Playingā feature that was just implemented, it doesnāt seem to take ping into account; itās probably connecting you to a US server, and, as was previously mentioned, cross-Atlantic play can make for some pretty high pings.

Sorry, being sarcastic. 
It depends on a few factors. When I play on the CGS Server Iām around 8-20. However, the server is hosted in Dallas, I live in Baton Rouge, my downstream connection is around 20-30Mbps and my machine is SuperBAD! There are other things at play but those are usually the main ones. When I connect to other servers the latency varies. Could be anywhere from 30-100 but not usually more.
Your physical distance really dictates how fast you will be able to connect. If the server has a bad connection you will connect at itās crappy speed, nothing you can do about that. Try an official Valve server, they are usually pretty strong. Lastly, downloading websites is not a good test of your connection speed. Go to a local bandwidth speed test site and try it out. Iād give you one but I doubt any of the ones I use are close. You mentioned being wireless before. Iād really try wired. Just because it says you are connected at 54Mpbs or whatever doesnāt mean you arenāt getting huge amounts of dropped packets or some other variable. Try a wire temporarily if need be and see if that helps.
