Targa Files

#1

I`m sure this has been mentioned recently but…

I have just completed my first animation in AM and was wondering what program is best used to combine all the Targa images into an animation file?

Learnt loads on this list btw.

Thanks,

Dale

Options
1- Quicktime pro - about £23
2- AM itself - (import sequence) then map onto patch surface in choreog - already paid for
3 - Dan Shimmyo from the AMList put an app out not long ago - search here
http://venice.killernuts.org/animaster/
and you’ll find his URL (and answers to lots of other questions) and you may find other AM related goodies
4 - certain freebies exist, if you search back in magazines you’ll even find Newtek video applications given away free in Digit. The gimp has a big following and I hear there’s now FilmGimp (search Google?) there are places like download.com where the right search will find you free applications.

5 - if you have the money, Premiere - Final Cut - and similar other applications exist.

certain options above are great if your sequence is not-to-be-edited but if you want to edit, add effects and overlays etc then you start paying.

any good?

Any Good!! That`s brilliant!

Thats a lot of info and gives me loads to go on. The only editing program I have is Pinnacle Studio 8 which wont really do what I want (which eventually will be a pro film I hope) and Im fairly certain it wont import Targa files anyway. I admit I havent tried this yet though as Im still reinstalling all my programs after yet another XP reinstall!

I will certainly get looking now I know what Im looking for. I havent rendered the Targas yet just a few quicktimes to test everythings okay.

Thanks again,

Dale.

A few months ago, DIGIT had a free copy of an older version of Newtek’s Aura. It works great for this purpose and is very fast. You can do the same thing as mentioned above in A:M already, but it is just a couple steps in Aura (just importing the sequence, pick your codec and video output option, etc.) and it flies. In fact Aura even saved the day with DV files Pinnacle Studio 8 wouldn’t open. I just ran them through Aura with Pinnacle’s DV codec (with no apparent loss that I could see) and they then imported fine. I believe Studio 8 will only open Targas in Title Deko, but won’t import a series. Studio is meant more for home and small business use for quick importing directly from camcorders and digital decks and doing some decent edits and transitions, more in line with its lower price. You can do neat stuff with it, though you’ll hit limitations eventually. That said, someone may figure out a way of making a digital movie with it, since most of the basics are there.

Ive been buying Digit over the last few months but must have missed that issue. I will check out the back issues. Pinnacle Studio 8 has been fine for editing and making my home video stuff presentable (though Ive had problems with it corrupting my system a couple of times) but I know I will need something better for more serious editing. Probably worry about that later.

I’ve always had good luck buying Adobe After Effects and Premiere online at Ebay. Got both for <$70. You just need to hunt around good.

Premiere really is nice to use to put stuff together.

Good tip. I`ve heard good things about Premiere. I will have a scan around Ebay.

Thanks,

What a wonderful throwaway line! Are they legal copies? Any problems with registering or upgrading legally with Adobe?

I sometime get back issues of CGI mags sent to me, often Digit as it doesn’t sell very well. I’ll have a look around as I’m not too far from Walsall. I’ll drop you a private email on CGTalk if I find it.

There’s even a back issue of Digit with Media Cleaner Pro 3 for Macs given away free - tried to register it but it was a time limited offer. That CD now serves as a Coffee Coaster…

:o(

Thats very kind of you alfiebabes! I have had a look through the back issues of Digit but obviously it doesnt list every program included on the cover disk.

You`re not too far from Walsall? Where abouts are you located?

Well, I’m usually in Cumbria but at present I’m hiding under my desk after starting a thread on CGTalk discussion which I’d really like to kill off.
I have found the disk mentioned - pop me a private email if you don’t want to stick your adress up in a public forum.:scream:

Take a look at MovieXone, it´s a free digital video editing program. I test it while back and was able to edit a DV with ease in it.

I have a habit I forget isn’t normal: I only use legal software. Even worse, I only use legal CDs. And when I sell a CD, I don’t keep a spare around. -gasp- :surprised:

So no problems upgrading legally, getting support, etc… Though I’m not using v7, I can’t think why I would bother- I bought my copies of 5 a year ago and they do everything I need.
