take off at sunset painting

Large format

used: Photoshop.

Hey all, I am new to the matte painting thread here. I have been very inspired by all the great posts made here, that I have been getting back into painting. I have been doing a fair bit of research into matte painting, and looking at alot of tutorials, but feel lost at how to begin studying and learning it. So i just decided to start doodling last evening and ended up with this. In the end it wasnt a matte at all, besides doing a quick paint over of a shuttle photo. The rest of it is hand painted clouds. I thought it would be a great warm up. Comments & Crits very welcome, and would love to get some info or suggestions on where to begin.
Thanks!
Greg

hi there, welcome ! well if you are interested in matte painting this is the right forum for sure, and of course you will learn lots at Rythm and Hues.
you have a nice start here, eventhough I would consider more this as an illustration , painting clouds is really hard I know about that , but you did very well in here, I don´t know if the composition would work, but I think you need more contrast overall image, so you will get better detail in between shadows and light, also the main fire trail from the rockets should be way more bright and the light scattered in the clouds caused by it , all these will help the image in visual composition as well, cause the main light or brither detailed area will caught your eye

keep it up !
