System Spec

#1

I am trying to get this system and I figured I should post the spec because of the cold review I have read about the AMD Phenom Processor. It couldn’t be that bad…besides I am moving up to 64 bit and couldn’t find a more affordable intel x64 capable chip. Xeon quad is a tad above my budget. Anyone running AMD Phenom? Please share your experiences, especially in terms of rendering speed and multi tasking (rendering while animating a scene with high res models).

I will be running XSI, Lightwave and Modo on this system, with Windows XP 64bit.

I need to pick up the system asap because my Core 2 duo isn’t cutting it on my current project and my Turion 64 x2 notebook isn’t anything to write home about.

You have a Dual Core 2 & Turion and still not “cutting it”? LOL! Well, I would imagine that if you used them in a network with the Phenom machine it would do the job. That would be pretty much eight cores being put to work there - give or take the odd techical detail.

The only thing about it I would question is the gfx card - but only in terms of gaming. The 8500GT is still a solid card.

I’ve read in PC FORMAT that the Phenom isnt as powerful as the latest intel quad-cores but much cheaper. If the price difference is big enough then the Phenom would be worth it - but that depends on what you would consider alot of money…

Go Intel…they have AMD beat at the moment.

Yeah, all the review got my enthusiasm dampened. I intend to use the Core 2 duo and Turion systems in a small render farm, maybe throw in some of my old P4 systems…not sure how that will work out with all the mixed hardware and OS…Vista, XP, AMD, Intel…

About the gfx card, I won’t be doing any gaming on that system, heck I won’t even have any internet connection on it.

Yup, it’s obvious. But is the Q6600 x64 capable? I want 8 gigs of RAM, so anything 32 bit won’t ‘cut it’…

#6

Hey, good to see you around again

I’d also suggest Intel…it’ll do 64 bit,.
Re your HD , why a 750 and 80 drives? Those are both out of the best bang for buck range atm.
i think 500s are the best deal now. And make sure they are SATA cause they are way faster than IDE selloff drives you may save a few bucks on.

Yup, I am back in town again…

I have decided to flow with intel 'cause I wanted someone to swear in the name of AMD…but that obviously isn’t happening. About the hard drive business, I picked up two 500s and they are pretty much SATA. Wasn’t going to buy anything else until May so I had to make sure I wasn’t getting into something as painful as my experience with Vista:argh:

Thanks fellas for the input.

yep, I have a q6600 and a qx6800. Both run xp64 with 8gigs of ram. The q6600 also overclocks to the low 3’s if you have the right ram and cooler.

#9

I’d get a beafier power supply.

#10

I missed that in the beginning but I got something a lot better now.
