Suggestions on animating a "pop-up book"?

#1

Hola mavens. I want to animate a pop-up book with EIAS and would be interested in thoughts as to the best way to proceed. I’m looking for something similar to this type of pop-up book:

I’ve certainly used plenty of hinge joints before, but have never attempted multiple attachment points as would be required here. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Looks like an IK job to me. However, such books sometimes are constructed in a way that the cardboard is bending… That would require bone chains…

Very interesting task

Simple deformations might work for a lot of it.
I’d love to see your final animation. Have fun!

Thanks for responding guys. I’ve found a couple fascinating sites devoted to “paper engineering” (see http://www.markhiner.co.uk/index.htm) and I have a newfound respect for what goes into making these pop-up books.

This is for a music video we’re producing for Vienna Teng and I’ll be happy to post the results assuming we get the look we’re after. Interestingly, I found that Fergie used an animated pop-up book approach for her video “Clumsy”:

And Tropical Iceland used a less complex variaion for theirs:

But my favorite find was this Lexus commercial, which was done practical in full-size!:

I’d also point out the Paralumino product line. You could use animated sweeps, animated control points, and animated lofting curves to produce geometry within EI that can be modified and molded with greater ease than just deformations alone.
