Strange XSI .obj export

Heya guys, I’ve recently taken up Maya, and I’m having a slight prob, I had my Kar model exported from XSI in .obj format, but when imported it looks like below… I also tried exporting without materials. Any ideas?

either edit polygons/normals/set to face or edit polygons/normals/set vertex normal and check unlock normals.

here’s a note from the doc - maybe it’s of help

Note
If you import a model that was created as .obj format with vertex normals already specified, you might not be able to soften or harden the resulting edges in Maya. Try unlocking the normals by choosing Edit Polygons > Normals > Set Vertex Normal > , and turning on Unlock Normals in the options window. Then soften or harden the edges.
