nice concept and judgeing by your painting skills this will be great. cant wait for more. why not try it at dusk? at moment seems a bit confused with all the colours and lack of lighting

@William : yes man, you are absolutely right! In this way I’ll be able to mix environmental light with artificial ones. As a matter of fact you read in my mind cause I’ve got a light’s scheme right now.
I decided to follow my usual workflow so this step will purely be in B&W. This will, as usual, help me to better understand surfaces and volumes. Of course I’ll start with colors as soon I’ll have a good idea of the lighting, in order to decrease the amount of color-errors of the final image.
Here a quick list in order of intensity :
- gameboard’s one : soft directional
- environment-dusk : diffused
- shop’s one : soft diffused
- mc’s one : soft for the external, directional the internal ones.

See you soon,
Serena.
Well, I defined basic lighting and then I started to apply colors.
Critics & suggestions are welcome !
before you get into too much detail i would suggest widening the canvas a bit as i think at the mo it is a bit claustrophobic… an the main focus to in the centre especially with the bright light above the table. widening it might allow you to move the two forground fingures over a bit as i would prefer them not to be in the way of the horse with the most action… just a thought
I’m just curious, but is the concept that it is people in horse costumes or real horses? I only say so because at this point with the horses heads far bigger than they would normally be, they seem to have more similar proportions to a human body and a horse mask.
I like the concept either way, keep it up. And I would definitely agree that in a scene with so many characters, widening the piece is always a good idea.
Serena,
I have to agree with William about the foreground figures, they have to go a little to the right, so we can fully appreciate the laughing horse. Well at least is what I think his doing right, laughing? In addition, I think your work will gain with a wider canvas.
Yes, I see you can do the sitting horses, still it will be challenging, so i’ll be checking this thread everytime.
Yep. the foreground figures are alittle distracting from the action, they’re too iluminated while the black horse seems to bee in the shadow by contrast, so maybe it is a matter of color as well as position, i think.
Keep the good work. You really got what it takes!:arteest:
hmm definitely a strange idea.looking forward to see the updates.Best of luck:thumbsup:
Hi there !
First of all thank you very much for the suggestion of “widening” the scene. I’m applying it right now and youwere totally right. Soon more updates…
At the moment I decided to provide you a simple sketch to show why and how I changed horses’ proportions and anatomy.
Hope it will help to better understand what I want to obtain by them.
Thank you again,
Serena.
nice to know the advice was useful… I gathered that the change of anatomy was on pupse to fit the scene. works very well
I think that the horses concept has great potential. You have good solid sketches to start with. I am looking forward to seeing your progress.
btw - Jack Hamm created a book on drawing animals which is very good in terms of basics right through to some very detailed analysis of four legged creatures including horses. (I only mention this because I noticed your comment “trouble with articulation”)
Good Luck! ![]()

Serena, your anatomy and lightning managment is amazing. I guess I will learn a lot watching your work. Thanks a lot for sharing it with us!
I didn’t noticed the “so many characters” issue, I must confess it looks good for me: it has a “comic” reminiscence I love. Anyway, I’m a newbie, so your desicion will be the best one.
And please, if you’re going to “wide” the scene… don’t touch the horse who’s out of the game!!
I’ll be looking forward for your updates!
Cheers
María
Yes. horse articulations are difficult, but is good to see you do your research to make them work! good!![]()
If any I would say he looks a little chubby.
See you around!
Hi Serena,:wavey:
I am so sorry I missed so much! You know I am fan anyways of your work!..
I love the proportions for the horse, I think is the best for the action given to them, the head does seem a bit big, but in this challenge a good comical caricature of horses its a good kick to the composition! As for the Canvas same suggestion that its already mentioned, and for the lighting I think its great for them
I would rather to se a bit of the top of the table so they angle will have a better perspective but thats just an extra I thought… But it will look so awesome I am sure!
