Strange Behavior (Illustration) Entry: Gideon van der Stelt
This may be the first picture I’m going to actually finish, but that’s what I think every time I start a picture. Strangely enough, I have never finished one yet (not a serious one). Anyway, first challenge for me, this one.
Alright - first concept sketch is about a tree growing in a rather unusual way. That blue spot at the bottomleft of the center is supposed to be a bird caught by a branch of the tree. Forgive me - sketching was never my strongest point :).
And, of course - good luck everyone!
Perspective is fucked up at the right half, but you get the idea. This approach allows me to add more detail than to the former sketch, I guess. Another tree gives everything more character and story…
I should add more depth though, but I think that will come when I start working 3D.
Here is my latest setting, enables me to add more detail, story, etcetera to the illustration. I had this little delay as I was on holiday for a few weeks - gotta work somewhat faster now, still a long way to go.
Alright - I started working on the environment, and it turned out a little different from the sketch. Those weird gray things next to the gray water are placeholders for trees, which will have some strange things too.
As first model I created a knotted background tree. The fun thing is that I created the bark shader, decided to give up while it was still rendering, and bought a book about texturing and lighting. When I returned to my computer, however, I saw the result and thought it was pretty good for a background model.
For the upper part, I used a Maya PaintFX. The bottom part was modelled using NURBS and SubDivs.
All C&Cs welcome.
Remember the bird from the first concept sketch? Well, this is the one - I’ll hang him in the tree with his neck. That’s why he’s looking so desperate, by the way.
All C&Cs welcome.
