Latest Update: Concept Sketch or 3D pre-visualization: The New Guy

I kicked around a few ideas, but finally settled on this one. Now I just have to decide on a color scheme.
Great sketch - the attitude of the old hands really convey that feeling of being a stranger walking into a romm full of locals. And the new guy looks suitably stiff
How are you going to convey that he is the new guy though? Clean new props compared to the worn ones of the old hands?
Also, are you leaving it ambiguous as to whether he has tentacle arms, or just has an octopus on his shoulder? If he is meant to have tentacle arms, you wouldn’t need to necessarilly show more of the figure, just perhaps have one finger curled inside that is also a tentacle.
I look forward to seeing more.
Great comments Ord! I hadn’t really thought too much yet about how to convey the idea that he is the new guy, but your idea of having new props (I assume you mean new clothes) is wonderful.
The actual connection of the tentacles to the figure I want to leave up to the viewer. I want the viewer to use their imagination some as to where exactly the tentacles are coming from. Are they just from an octopus, are they actually part of his head? Those answers are up to you.
I really like the way its composed, and you already have some good characters for the old guys designed.
As for the new guy, its hard to tell right now that he is the new guy, and why he is different. I mean its obvious that he has tentacles, but its hard to tell where they’re coming from. For all I know at this point he just has a pet octopus on his shoulder
If he is in fact a human/sea creature hybrid, maybe make more of his strange body parts (tentacles, extra eyes maybe) coming out of other places on his body we can see, like from under his shirt at the back or through his sleeve.
Cool idea though, I’ll check back
hey there, I must agree with the other posters on here - the tentacles should really be seen coming from the new guy. I mean, if its an octopus on his head, sure, that’s strange, but an octopus man is a bit stranger - or maybe less. This sort of conflict I think has to be worked out or the effect of the piece would be lost on the viewer - and trust me, this piece has potential! Loving the man in the back’s reaction (whoa!) , though before i go, I just want to clarify, the hand of the new guy’s at an odd angle - is that on purpose (strange, new, etc)?
i feel like the new guy is to stiff…almost like he is standing at attention…his hand is way to stiff, it should be more relaxed…i think the new guy would do better if he was the cool new guy with the octopus on his shoulder and it would be a more natural relaxed pose…its cool to be different kind of theme…just some thoughts…goodluck
Great comments from everybody, thanks! The stiffness of his hand was intentional. The guys in the background are very loose and comfortable looking, but this new guy is almost unnaturally nervous and uptight. I did this to also allude to the fact that he could be alien, and the tentacles are actually part of his head.
I also didn’t want to show where the tentacles were emanating from because I wanted to leave their origins somewhat enigmatic. Kind of like the classic sci-fi and horror movies where you don’t really see much of the creature.
However, maybe I haven’t done these things properly? More feedback would be great.
Hey Frank - I had noted the stiffness at first as well, but then figured it was meant to be so I think it is fine.
Yes, by props I meant clothes etc., although I think you would really need a way to show that he is turning up as the new guy (for work?), rather than say just a stranger in the area. Perhaps you could give all the characters some sort of work uniform, or maybe give the new guy something like a brand new lunchbox.
