Strange Behavior (Illustration) Entry: Daryl Dunlap
This is my first challenge I’ll be really participating in. I’ve kept up with past challenges as an observer…and I’m always suprised by the winner.
My entry will involve some strange behavior in nature…primarily the elements.
I’ve decided on a night scene. The elements playing dominoes in some kind of dark setting. The picture will capture the moment Lightening is about to win the game and has smashed his last piece onto the table, causing the other pieces to fly off the table, with sparks going everywhere, and the other players wincing in defeat.
The premise is the elements taking a unapproved break from their eternal duties. There will be little cherubims keeping watch, so they dont get caught.
Lighting and Fire will be the source of the light in the scene. I plan on including Ice, Earth, Wind, Lightening, and Water.
For the setting, I’m tossing around: the middle of a forest, a cavernous cave, or the bottom of the ocean. I like the ocean idea, because it would allow for an interesting background with all of the sea creatures gathered around watching them play as well.
Just tossing around a couple Ideas:
Bottom of the Ocean:
-
Game Table
I think that a huge turtle, who’s turned over to expose his flat detailed underside would be a nice setup as a game table. The turtle laying on his back (shell) with his hands tucked behind his head in a relaxing position watching them play a game on his belly. -
Scene Structure
Top - The face of some ominous figure formed in the clouds looking down towards the ocean.
Middle - Posideon looking towards the face in the clouds and pointing down towards the bottom of the ocean with the top of the ocean surf in view, then continuing down with light caustics and depth cues.
Bottom - the main scene. -
Game Pieces
That scene in Titanic where she closes her eyes and swings the axe has always cracked me up. So some cute little creature, I dunno yet, all wide-eyed holding the piece down with his feet, and holding the chisel in his arms watching this hammer come flying towards him. He can see that the creature swinging the hammer has one eye closed as well. (haha). Yeah, maybe the creature holding the chisel is somekinda shellfish, his shell has cracks in it, and tape on it, because it’s gotten whacked by mistake a couple times in the process.
Middle of the Forest:

Scene Structure
I like the idea of the morning in the forrest, but I also like the evening scene. I could do both with a dawn scene, with the sun rays just starting to creep in over the tree tops while the forrest floor is still covered in darkness. For the season, either the middle of Fall with all the colored leaves, or the beginning of Spring, with the snow and a thawing creek. -
Game Table
For a playing surface here, I guess the trunk of a tree that’s been logged would suffice. -
Game Pieces
Little chipmunks sitting off to side are busy making game pieces by chiseling them with a rock and branch on pieces of bark. One holds the piece, another holds the chisel, while yet another weilds the rock. Chipmunks are super engineers so they are popping these pieces out like pro’s. With a big burly beaver as the supervisor, who’s also providing the bark to the assembly line.
The cave idea seems too creepy to me now. I definately like the cute-n-cuddly direction this is headed.
