Strange Behavior (Illustration) Entry: Christopher Beaver

Hi Chris,
I like the concept of your cats, the style look Celtic so its perfect for Vikings, :thumbsup:maybe some futures from them as well in their hair…

I like a lot that camera angle, you see the action and the space better, but you got time to play more with the camera, I also like the lighting concept of the composition, try to play a bit with orange and blue
.I think it’s a good start for the scheme colors, about the texture, why not trying a normal map from, Z-brush, it’s a nice fancy bump map, but I am no expert in 3D. About the cats hair yeah it’s difficult when your computer can handle the hair plug-in. But I think you can pull off some really nice hair plane textures.

#16

haha great piece already…i love the kitten on the girls shoulder  :love:

#17

Lol revenge of the viking cats!!! nice sketches, I like the angle you’re playing off on your latest one.

#18

Woohoo, I’ve gotten as far as two pages ~! Thanks for the comments, everyone

And Axel, I’d love to take your suggestions on normal-mapping, but I don’t have ZBrush or any equivalent. I’ve never even had the chance to play with anything like that.

The kitten, incidentally, is designed based on one of my own cats. Her name’s Buckets.

#19

Just getting ideas in my head for various little props to have around the scene.

#20

Don’t worry, I haven’t changed my idea away from the Viking kittens  I was just playing around with other ideas. In this version, the little scamps are trying to steal a motorcycle.

I think this’d be a fun idea too, but there are 112 days left in the challenge and I’d spend 110 of 'em building that motorcycle.

#21

Lol, the one with viking cat invading the village is so funny ! cute little viking.

#22

I honestly love the kitties with the motorcycle. Adorable . . .especially the one on the handle and the two by the gas.

#23

Hello Chris,

hahaha…Love it genius! :):scream:Those kittens are so going to steal that motorcycle to upgrade their prrrrrr!I specially love the expression the one in the back hoping to start impatiently, I still like for the challenge the Vikings, but definitely you can post them together I mean

. They could invade the village for the precious golden motorcycle or something like that…about the props they look nice fun to model! .,Mostly that ethnic dragon lamp…about normal mapping it is difficult with out any modeling special software
but then again there’s some hope on the net
I haven’t seen anything good yet
if I do I ‘ll let you know

Say hi to buckets from me hehe…:wise:and hope he actually haven’t done that to a motorcycle with his gang!

Take care …and keep that great sense of humor coming:thumbsup:

#24

Not much to talk about here. I’m working on props for the Viking Kittens scene, but as most of them are very basic things (cups, bowls, oars, etc.), until I’ve at least textured those I can’t justify the number of electrons I’d need to inconvenience to upload 'em.

I will show these though; a barrel and a shield that’ll go on the side of the ship.

#25

Now that is a funny concept! Ha! I like the progress in your second sketch, much more dynamic.

#26

haha u should include the motorbike in it, then it could be viking cats on a motorbike. That makes it even stranger. haha

#27

Chris, thats a very funny idea!Viking cats??!! LOL ,I will visit often to see how youre progressing with your illustration!

#28

Taken a couple of days off to reacquaint myself with Metroid Prime… Back to work now! This is a textured shield for the Viking ship the kittens’ll be leaping out of.

Textures are all hand-painted/otherwise finagled in Photoshop.

To Doug, Breadwig, and KingJai, thank you  I hope I’ll live up to expectations!

#29

Hi Chris,
I like the texture you give to your shield, maybe what I will suggest its that looks to new, and since its has to look more Viking add some corrosion to the materials or broken pieces here and there
other than that I haven’t got any luck in knowing what else to do with normal maps with out “mud box or z-brush” sorry I will keep asking:)

#30

I should probably clarify at this point that this isn’t the first time I’ve trotted out the Viking Kittens. This entry is based on a little mini-comic I did back in my freshman year, when I was mulling over the possibility of a Sequential minor. The concept is just such a sheer joy to play with that, in this Strange Behavior challenge, I couldn’t resist bringing it in for Round II.

This is a part of the cover from that comic; I’m using it as the basis for what the dragonship is going to look like.

#31

The first WIP of the dragonship’s mast.

And by the way, Axel, yes – The wood on the shield is already stained a bit, but I’ll be working to dirty it up more

#32

Second WIP of the mast.

#33

Third WIP of the mast.

You’re gonna rock!
