Yeehaw…cg challenge here we go.
Weapons at the ready…draw! And all for the love of a woman. Who will come out of this one alive?
C & C are most welcome!
Tried something else with the same theme. Mmmmaybe going more towards this one…I dunno.

I like these…but I’m going to see if I can come up with anything else. I just haven’t really settled on one with enough umph. Any critique given is much appreciated. Cheers!
I like it…I prefer the illustration that only has one cowboy “drawing”…this seems to focus more on the comedy point. I would try having the guy “drawing” in the foreground, so the other gunslinger is naturally looking towards the viewer (with his guns at his side in disbelief) rather than turning to look at the camera. You’d just see the back of the eisel, but because of it’s unique shape, you’d know what it was and therefore not lose the punch of the gag.
Keep going and good luck.
Paul
Hi domoarigato. this has to be for me he best concpet in this challeng so far. hit the nail on the head as far as the breif is concerned. your draing is excelent to. cant wait to see how this urns out… please please please do not do somethign else. will be watching this one closly. i agree with paul… try another persective wih the guy draing in the forground and the gun man scratching his head in the back… just to compare… although the one where he is looking at the ‘camera’ is hilarios and very well composed. keep up the good work.
Good to see you heere again, Domo. Great concept so far. I laughed aloud when I first opened you thread. I’m going to disagree with WIL and Paul: If only one guy is drawing, it could come off as a desperado about to shoot a defenseless artist (and of course no one would want that!) In the very first sketch, it’s so clear that they’re having a duel, and the title of the piece is completely obvious without you even typing it.
One thing I might suggest to add is one taller building - a town hall? a sheriff’s office? - with a clock on it’s face, and the time being high noon. It’s a classic time for a old western duel (perhaps because of the Gary Cooper classic “High Noon,” perhaps not) but it’s a small touch that could sutlely help sell your point.
Good luck with it all!
Thanks to all who replied. I’m taking all the advice into consideration and knocking off some more drawings. It’s a toss up but I’ll try to come up with something cool. Thanks again for the replies guys.
actually agree with walrus too… the first one is very clear as far as your concept is concerned… just wanted to see a drawing of pauls idea to compare

I made some changes and did a quick lighting test to see where this is going. I think I may be heading for this one more. The other one was much more delicate to handle. I may bring it back from the dead, we shall see. I think the composition could use some work in some areas, hopefully I’ll feel more creative tomorrow. C&C, as always, are most welcome. Cheers

I uhhh…don’t really know what happened there. Hopefully I can get the CGtalk guys to fix this problem.
Wow! Love the drawing! Have you thought about other expressions the gunman could possibly show, like urgency or haste? He looks like a cool killer
Will come back to this thread, good luck!
Fantastic idea and great sketches!
I’m late, but I’m glad you are leaning towards the ‘pencil duel’ having both contestants drawing.
It’ll be a real pleasure to follow this thread.
Hmm, I see you I made some changes and did a quick lighting test…!
The tower in the back looks good.
One more suggestion, if I may? The foreground guy has a great look on his face where he’s drawing but also keeping his eye on his opponent. Like he’s concerned that the other guy may be doing a better picture, or will finish first. What if the rear guy’s head turned a bit more to the left, so that we could see his eye, and he was giving the foreground artist a similar distrustful look? Every time I see the front artist, I want to follow his gaze to the other artist, but if the otehr artist were also looking back at the first, it would allow for a compositional ping pong where the viewer might follow their gazes back and forth.
Anyhow, just an idea. Good luck with it, it’s coming along great!
HA! This is great!
I see the humor in both of them. The one with the guns illustrates the strangeness of the cowboy artist more but visually I like the one where they are both drawing.
The only thing I notice and mainly because I’m looking too deep is that it is high noon but there are distinct cast shadows that give it more of a late afternoon feel. May be something you need to check into.
Good Luck!
Edit- I agree with Walrus about the other artist’s look
