They are like placeholder shaders. These are usually simple blinn shaders with preliminary color just to test how the model will look when textureed/shaded. They get changed with the final shaders. Hope that makes sense.

Yes. Did you use Mental Ray, with both Final Gather and Global Illumination to get those soft air-brush looking textures, or did you rely on a more complicated render-node network to create those soft shades? Thanks!
