stranded

Hey everyone, just trying to get better as an artist. For this one I’m going after a sunset type feel on an abandoned beach. It’s supposed to feel like the day has broke, and the night is moving in quickly, the only familiar comfort being that of an old abandoned shack. Let me know what you think!

I could definitely see a scene like this in a movie, great work

Thanks Majora, I was looking at it a bit more, and decided to take the lighting to more of a golden tone, to fit a moody sunset feel. Here’s an update.

hey Zach welcome to this forums, and yeah I agree, this looks very promising, the shack is kind of getting lost and blending in with the foreground maybe stronger highlights, stronger keylight on it will help it, also the mountain edges could have a little more detail, break it up with more trees, some more interesting foreground could help, the water is too far maybe and too dark , try changing that
looking forward to see the progress

Thanks guys! I’ve been fairly busy at work, so I haven’t had much time to work on this, but I chiseled out a couple of hours to spend with this. It’s not quite done yet I don’t think, but it’s getting closer. I have some plans to add in more detail where things are soft on the hills in the background and add in some rocky features to the mtns along the left, and a bit along the right as well, but other than that, I think detailing out the beach a little more, and some more stuff going on with the shack, and i’m ready to phone this one in.

So I made some more changes to it, and i’m going to give it a couple of days to let the paint dry and then I’ll see if I’m happy with it or not. Any more comments from you guys are always great.

Hey Zach,

Yeh that hut is looking better but still getting lost. The issue for me is that it seems to blend with the trees behind it, at first i thought this was part of the roof. You need to seperate the trees from the hut. Also add a little mist between the hut and the right hill maybe. Other than that, looking good

Dave.

Hey Zach,

Looks really good, any chance you can post a bigger image? Little hard to see the detail at the mo.

cheers

nice foreground!

about the Hut I agree with david, take advantage of atmospherics to make one one element step in front of another, that could worth a try

p.s. how’s blur so far?:buttrock:

Thanks guys! I started this painting almost a year ago, and then didn’t touch it until I posted it here. I had been wanting to get around to finishing it forever, and I’m glad I came back to it. That was a good idea about the atmosphere in between the mtns and the shack, I think it makes it pop a bit more. At first I was apprehensive about it because I sort of wanted the shack to not pop out at first when you look at it, but rather to reveal itself as your eye wandered around, but after messing with it a bit, I like it more this way.

-Jaime, Blur is awesome man, it’s a stark contrast to the last gig… Very cool place to work, and obviously full of incredible talent. Your new gig must be pretty sweet I’d imagine. Thanks for the comments and crits as well man, always helpful.

Aha thanks Jaime, this interwebs thing is clever, no?

@ Zach, having had a closer look it’s really good, definitely good idea to replace the old shack, which got lost a bit in the background.

Only minor crit is that i’d expect to see a little more of the bright sunlight hitting the ground, there’s a bit of a battle between fog, cloud cover and the sunlight in the atmos of this matte. Given the bright highlights in the clouds i think a bit more of this on the ground would work.

keep up the good work!
