Great challenge!!

Our team will be working on the legend of “Archimedes’ Mirror” and the siege of Syracuse.

Archimedes was one of the greatest minds of all time. As a mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer he made contributions to many fields of science and also designed innovative machines and siege engines.

Some say he also created the legendary “Heat Ray”, which was a large array of highly polished bronze mirrors used to focus sunlight on to a ship until it burned.

All of those weapons were used to protect Syracuse from the roman attackers (214–212 BC), and we thought it could be a great chance to put interesting steampunk engines, weapons and flying ships in the middle of a great epic battle.

We’ll post more details soon.
Good luck you all!!

Here are some information we are using to create our story.

"Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa, Sicilian: Sarausa, Classical Greek: Συρακοῦσαι / transliterated: Syrakousai) is a historic city in southern Italy, the capital of the province of Syracuse. The city is noted for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture and association to Archimedes, playing an important role in ancient times as one of the top powers of the Mediterranean world; it is over 2,700 years old. Syracuse is located in the south-east corner of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Syracuse next to the Ionian Sea.

The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians and became a very powerful city-state. Syracuse was allied with Sparta and Corinth, exerting influence over the entire Magna Grecia area of which it was the most important city. Once described by Cicero as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”, it later became part of the Roman Republic and Byzantine Empire."

wikipedia - Syracuse, Sicily

"Despite diplomatic attempts, war broke out between the Roman Republic and the Kingdom of Syracuse in 214 BC, while the Romans were still busy battling with Carthage at the height of the Second Punic War.

A Roman force led by the General Marcus Claudius Marcellus consequently laid siege to the port city by sea and land. The city of Syracuse, located on the eastern coast of Sicily was reknowned for it’s significant fortifications, great walls that protected the city from attack and among the Syracuse defenders was the mathematician and scientist Archimedes

“…, Archimedes’ devised defensive devices to counter the Roman efforts including a huge crane (see the Claw of Archimedes) operated hook that was used to lift the enemy ships out of the sea before dropping them to their doom. He also created a giant mirror (see Heat ray) that was used to deflect the powerful mediterranean sun onto the ships sails, setting fire to them. These measures, along with the fire from ballistas and onagers mounted on the city walls, frustrated the Romans and forced them to attempt costly direct assaults.”

Hello everyone. I am one of team members. On our style of steampunk, we resolve don’t adopt the use of gunpowder and even electricity, since we want something more rustic, the most advanced equipments are moved to steam. Then we will have flying boats with motors that will produce impulse, with steam power + wind, catapults and other mechanisms. Soon we will post those concepts.

Thank’s.

Finally we have our storyboard. Hope we have time to complete this challenge.

Telli

Hi Telli,

Thanks for the support! Yes, we are planning on shooting at least two takes. One will be the soldier looking for the flying fleet and the other one will be the Archimedes scene. We will try to shoot some other material as soldiers in diferent situations to composite with the city plates. Our producers are looking for costumes, camera, places, actors, etc.

What we are really looking for is to have fun!!

#17

These are some of the sketches we are doing to detail the ideas we have talked before.

#18

Here are studies about some city elements.

Unfortunately there are a lot of new projects in house so we’ll have to use our sleep hours for the challenge!!

#19

Here are some studies of the roman flying fleet.

We decided that the floating force will come from steam propulsion mixed with wing-like sails and main sails for direction.

We wanted to escape from the balloon type ship.

#20

Good work so far;) I can’t wait to see the result!
