Hi everyone. I decided to depict a scene from a famous Maori Myth about the hero trickster Maui who breaks into a forbidden cave and steals his dead grandmother’s jawbone which he uses as the fishing hook that snares the giant fish that becomes the north island of Aotearoa (New Zealand). All crits and comments welcome. I would appreciate comments pertaining to composition at this early stage. Thanks!

Hey Tam,

Cool sketch, like the mood and lighting on it. The legend that you choose sounds really cool, and puts an unique touch on your concept, great  Good luck mate and waiting for more updates on your idea. Cheers!!

Wooohooo! neat story!

The framing and the backlight work really well to empathize the action. I really wanna see how this one evolves.

Thanks for the support. Had a bit of time today so started thinking about her head a bit. Trying to balance the Steampunk aesthetic with traditional Maori design.

Ow, very nice concept! Quite original too! Don’t think anyone else is doing something similar. Best of luck Tam!

Just starting to block in the structural shapes.

Going back to basics. Got my Jeno Barcsay anatomy book out and built this skull in Z Brush to get a feel for the basic structure for Maui’s grandmother.

Thanks Rupy. I love where yours is going too. Lovely drawings.

A lot of Polynesian myths share the same characters and Maui is one of those. Really great epic stories.

Cheers
