Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Nicholas Hunter
Perseus
A classic steampunk hero obviously needs goggles and a mechanical arm. I may have lost something in translation in the conversion from myth to steampunk but generally I have created an alterative that hopefully isn’t too radically different.
Winged boots/pegasus = steam jet-boots
adamantine sword = adamantine gunsword (was considering a chainsword but thought it a little clunky)
medusa’s head in a bag = a mini steam orb in a bag (doesn’t turn you to stone but blinds those who look apon it, kind of a long shot, diverging from the source material)
invisibility helmut = goggles (allow him to look at the mini steam thing)
shield = mechanical arm
I forget what the cape is for but think it fits the picture.
Andromeda
A beautiful women in Victorian (ye olde english) style clothing.
Could have made her a mechanical, steampunk android but thought she was probably the strongest human element or something…
Well I only found out about this competition last week, so I guess I got alot of catching up to do!
There are so many great myths/legends to choose from. Initially I wanted to do a creature from thai mythology as there are some really cool birdman statures around the temples in Thailand that are great reference for modelling but I could find any detailed stories or scenes to use.
So I went back to something a little more familiar. Icarus sprang to mind, as did the minotaur but the scene which held my curiosity was of perseus facing the sea monster with Andromeda chained to the rock.
Admittedly, this scene has been recreated a million times, which may work against it, being perhaps too familiar but on the other hand it can be easily appreciated and I think works well in the steampunk style/genre.
First off I decided to keep everything simple, modelling, palette, composition etc like the retro style in ‘Steam Detectives’ by Kia Asamiya which isn’t pure steampunk but as far as I’ve seen, nothing claims to be definitively steampunk.
I had a vague picture in my head of what the final image would look like but first I decided to sketch the characters
Cetus or Ceto, not 100% sure. Or the Kraken from ‘Clash of the Titans’
Basically a mechanical sea monster, steam powered of course!
Am still not happy with the sketches and will experiment while I’m modelling.
I sketched 2 compositions I like and have yet to decide on which is best. There is also a quick colour version just to give me an idea of mood. It is pure coincedence that the palette is primary colours, red, blue, yellow (more of an orange). It reminds me of a ‘Giant Robo’ poster, just needs some powerful kanji.
I wanted to keep my models cartoony and focus more on shapes than detail as I would doctor/texture the image up later in photoshop. I know the 3d puritans will cringe but I don’t have the time/skill to do all the steam/lighting/hair/cloth affects in 3d.
After finishing the head I found I had lost a lot of the cartoony style in the sketches but was happy with the model and decided to keep going.
Funny thing is, we prolly won’t see his face in the end composition. oh well!
Wonderful concept drawings. You can see the energy and fluency in each one, too! Looking forward to this!
Almost there, I don’t want to get too bogged down in the modelling though when I see the standard of the other entrants, I feel like I need another year to get my models up to par!
Here are some of the parts.
Hey shuggs thanx for the reply, if only modelling were as easy as sketching.
I’m not sure what I’m gonna do about the hair. Maybe paint it on in photoshop which probably isn’t the most authentic method.
Now for the sea monster…
Nice modeling so far. Her face is very pretty, and I like the level of stylization on the hero character. Good luck with the rest!
