We call them ‘ladies’ here, Martin. Behave yourself.

#9

Good luck on the challenge, hope to see some concepts soon.

#10

Doing some sketches just to work the idea out of my head.

#11

Still very sketchy at this stage. I’m obviously going along a Nordic theme here, trying to flesh the idea out.

The quote is from ‘The Poetic Edda’, translated by Lee M. Hollander.

#12

Cool bro…love the look of the first sketch. You gonna filter your final animation so it looks similar to that?

#13

Thanks Tyson!
I’ll probably work on having some textural element to the overall presentation. As soon as I posted the tree sketch I hated it. The typography is awful too! Serves me right for trying to create while i’m overtired.

#14

hey Martin, keep em coming buddy.
I’m really curious what direction you will go. Also, will you be doing a 2d or 3d illustration?
And btw, it’s cool to hate your babies. More beautiful ones will be born out of that

#15

Hey man! Dig the Dave McKean-ish textured thing you got going! Like Art2 asked; are you thinking 2d or 3d? I could easily see that style for a 2d anim!

I’m gonna have to agree with you on the typography… it kind of a hard read… Maybe go for something more angular (like runes only with the latin aplhabet or something?)

Good luck in the challenge! Gonna be cool to see more!

I’ll be watching - good luck man!

Cool, the stories of Yggdrasil and the whole collection of stories from Edda makes for a great base. Can’t wait to see where you take this, love the Norse stuff  (Not just because I’m from Norway :p)

Thanks for the kind words people!

Art2: I’ll be doing a 2D animation, sort of a cross blend of live-action and motion graphics. At least that’s the plan!
dCepT: Yeah, the typography was a really, really bad choice. I was stupidly tired when I did that. I will be incorporating some of the Elder Futhark into the work, but since most people can’t read the ancient Germanic rune sets, i’m also going to have to find a nice english one as well!
daw: Thanks man, can’t wait to see what you crop up!
Raptorus: Me too, I studied Scandinavian mythology as a child… or rather was obsessed with it. Nice to see a Swinburnian! That was my old university.

As to the concept, I will be trying to focus on Odin’s journey and the getting of wisdom from the Well of Mimir, with the subsequent famous hanging from the world tree for nine days. I want to try to fuse the concept of stempunk with the classic elements of the tale, especially focusing on the losing of Odin’s right eye, the Well and Yggdrasil.

Sorry for the lack of updates all, i’ve been hammered at work recently. Here’s some great reference to tide you all over!

I really like the style of this, makes it unique. And its nores mythology, like our entry. Very strong visuals this has.
