Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Kevin Maginnis
I want to tackle the idea John Henry becoming a machine to beat a machine…this is a doodle i was messing with yesterday.
after talking with my lady she gave me a good idea. making the machine that John Henry is more the living will of the working class he represents. So I messed with constructing him out of arms and hands, levers and gears. So instead of a literal “robot John Henry” it’s a little more evocative.
really nice concept lots of personality.
im not familiar with john henry though i kinda remember a subways ad i saw when i was in canada. about some fireman loosing weight by eating subs ^^ his name was kinda similar
anyways … looking forward to more !
ah…well here’s a quick synopsis:
John Henry was a black railway worker. He drove the spikes that hold the tracks together. He was the best at what he did. One day they brought in a machine to do the job he does. So to keep everyone from being replaced by machines he challenged the machine (and it’s operator) to a race. He fought hard and won in the end, but at the cost of killing himself. So he’s remembered as a working man’s hero in legend.
I didn’t do the story justice, there’s some rhymes and stories and even a statue of him out there. thanks for the feedback!
