Latest Update: Final Image: Hoaxters

My first go at a challenge. Steam punk divers looking for the Loch Ness monster while it looks over their shoulder. Hope I’m not being judged on this sketch.

A bit further on. Its a first attempt as I said and needs lots of work on the lighting and stuff. Any feed back from you more experienced guys is welcome.

The backdrop as found on flickr as original (left) and with a simple castle outline painted on it (right).

To the right is a test render of the boat with textures applied - using Carrara.

Below this are some of the objects in the picture modeled in Moi.

Inspired by the Loch Ness monster this image shows two hoaxters that have made their own fake. In the background the real monster cruises past.

The background is a combination of a digital photograph of clouds a painting of a ruin made with Paint Shop Pro and a “realistic Sky” made with Carrara.

The figures are M3 and Sea Monster from Daz3d. The clothing is 3 piece suit for M3. The other figure is Apollo maximus with textures from the creators site and a black Carrara shader for the wet suit.

The tool in Apollo’s hand is from the collection that ships with Carrara.

All other things were made by me using Moment of Inspiration (Moi)and textured and rendered in Carrara.

To be honest, I think you’re being too hasty in trying to submit this as your final image. Frankly, it could still benefit from additional work. For starters, your overall image is a little unclear, in terms of what is actually going on. It’s important for images to tell a story, but in your case, the story really isn’t clear. Perhaps instead of actually having the Loch Ness monster in the image, rather have some documents on the guy’s boat, which clearly show images of the monster, which would tell a more intriguing tale - somehow, having the actual creature in the image somewhat confuses this story (as odd as that may seem).

The composition of your image is also very muddled. One’s eyes are immediately drawn to the bright glowing device, which really dominates the image, yet isn’t particularly interesting to look at. All the other equipment is hard to understand and almost looks purpose-less. Try designing the devices so their function is more apparent. To be brutally honest, I can’t really figure out what’s actually going on in the middle of the image - what exactly is the bright green thing, and what is the black shape below it?

Your lighting, rendering and use of colour could really be improved overall. Your colours are really over-saturated, and your lighting is lacking dynamic. Use lighting as a tool to enhance your scene, rather than to simply illuminate it. You can use lighting to create more atmosphere and drama. Avoid having really dark, black areas as they add nothing to the image and just create an overall muddiness that is quite unappealing. Also work more on your shaders so that the lighting can create nice speculars and other points of interest on your surfaces, because right now all your surfaces are very dull. Subtle use of reflectivity and specular mapping can really add a lot of dynamic interest to your surfaces, making your overall image far more appealing.

There are still many weeks left on this challenge. It would be a shame for you to simply submit this instead of using this time to really push your skills and improve the image.

Hi Leigh
Thanks for taking the trouble to take a look. Is it possible to unsubmit? Or come to think about your comments, is it possible to radically reconstruct an image? I’m very new to this so rather confused by the process. I imagined that one did ones best and crossed ones fingers.

Just continue submitting updates, it’s as simple as that  As I said, there is still plenty of time in this challenge, so there is no reason to rush. You have a long time to go before you have to submit a final image, so just keep tweaking it and improving it in any way you can.

as Leigh said you have like more than two months to work on ya image
and make it even better
