Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Joana Garrido
My first CG Challenge.
Let’s see until where I go, ahah!
It will be an historical character full of “foggy legend”…
OK, I’ll try to do my best to explain this one.
My image will be a portrait of one of the most iconographic kings of the Portuguese History: D. Sebastião (Sebastian).
He died very young - at the age of 24 - in a battle in the North of Africa that was, we could say, destined to be lost.
Why is he so symbolical? After his death, the crown was taken by the King of Spain, and stood there for 60 years. For many more years the people were still waiting for a figure to come and
save the country from its problems.
The legend says that Sebastian would eventually come in a foggy morning to rescue us.
So I want to show him alive, living somewhere in the North of Africa. And maybe doing it well.
About the steampunk theme: that will be presented in the apparel and props around him, hopefully a steampunk with a “twist”, because I want to give an Islamic touch to it.
I will start by working on the head.
Gradually my inspiration for the modeling will come when I gather some references.
This image show the basic layout scheme. I still haven´t decided if the crow (the bird thingy on his hand) will be there or on the left hand.
Hhahaha! nice to see you here!. interesting story i must say. you have to finish this before going to the jungle!
why not a parrot?
I was nervous before. Now I am really nervous!
Still not sure how I’m gonna implement the design argh!
I have to work a little bit every night, let’s see when I finish this.
Why a crow? I love crows… “bah… bah… bah!” There is also another reason but that is too cryptic…
Thanks a lot guys!
… another.
Just to get an idea of how the volume/scale of the clothes is working.
It is supposed to be a mix of Islamic and western style.
Tomorrow I will put the first iteration for the model of the head, hopefully.
First step for the head. Maybe I will give it more definition in ZBrush.
I already have some ideas for the clothes. Will put the concept later on.
Bom Dia, Joana! It is nice to base your concept around an actual historical legend. I was thinking of similar stuff but figured it will be more fun to work on some far-fetched mythology instead.
The face looks very young, almost baby-ish. I googled the guy up and yeah, the resemblance is very close. Nice job there!
As for the clothes, when I looked at the painting of him elsewhere, his costume already had a nice steampunk look to it minus the gadgetry. I wondered what you are going to come up with for that part. Right now his initial costume blockup look dracula-ish.
All the best and have fun with this!
Hey Jerome!
Yes, I should have posted a reference with his face. I will do it later.
The clothes… mmm. I would like to show some mix, some blending of styles. That can turn out interesting or a complete “craperie”. I already did some doodles, but I need to see some actual geometry to see if it works.
Thanks for the comment. See you around ehehehe!
PS: one interesting fact: people were so anxious for him to get back to the country that they actually did a painting of him young and another that shows how he would look older. Kinda before-after thing. Isn’t that awesome?
Hey Joana,
Your concept sounds really cool and original, nice
And the head model is great!
I think the Sebastião weight need to be on his left arm, in a more reflexive gesture. Perhaps you need some sort of clock ( maybe a sand clock) in the last stage before the start the steam machine that will return the life to Sebastião, only a idea
Again, nice work and looking forward for more updates!
Nice subject Joana!
Portuguese history on the way!
I like it! Love the mouth of the character!
Arrefinfa-lhe com carinho! :buttrock:… lol
Cumpz,
-Malanjo
YA! conceito marado!
Go for it Joana!
my only critic is the Sebastião Head got to young features i mean he might had a few hard times in the desert and facing lions in Africa and that stuf some aging and scars would make him tougher and more King! but i may be drawing wrong conclusions since is such an early wip…
Aye… going slow here.
Now I have to choose between the “rich royal” or the “classy noble” palettes
The costume has little to do with the north-african so far. And probably will stay this way.
Only have to fix some obvious problems.
I think I should start doing the furniture/set.
Nice work on the clothing so far! At first, I didn’t even realize that the right one was textured! Maybe a touch of color as an accent could help - some gold, or a colored ascot instead of white, something like that. But don’t think that that means I must like the left one better: Either one could work, depending on what the whole environment is. Are you just texturing as you go or do you have some rough layout/composition/palette sketches to figure out those things for your entire piece? (And if not, you might want to consider doing that, as it would give you a roadmap and save you from the trouble of texturing things twice!
)
Good luck!
Really nice modeling and texturing for the clothes! Both colorings works well so far, the red one being the most traditional I think. As Walrus I think that the bright one could be beautiful with just some details in color, blue?
Also I suppose once you texture him he will probably look older so no comments on that. Great work so far!
