Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Gunilla Elam

#21

Interesting and original… but more difficult for me… do you already feel well the scene ?

#22

This really feels like a party now. Great to see you entered, Gunilla!

Whichever idea you go with, I have no doubt you’ll do it in great style. Good luck

#23

I found this idea really mistic and great!

Good luck girl !:bounce:

#24

Hey Gunilla!! Great to see you here!!:bounce: All the best!

#25

Hey Gunilla, great to see you here. Bring it on.

My major source of inspiration for this comes from the work of Alice and Martin Provensen.

As a kid I had a couple of books that I later came to understand influenced my taste for illustration more than others. One of them was a wonderful book about the Iliad and the Odysee. I could look in it for hours admiring the images and living myself into the adventures. A while back I found my old book and to my big surprise I still find it as fascinating as I did as a kid. The challenge will be to combine the modenistic style of these illustrations with a steam punk style. I’ve no idea on how to do that yet but I’ll give it a try.
I will do this in a combination between 2d and 3d.

On Odysseus way home he had to pass between two monsters, Skylla and Kharybdis. Kharybdis would swallow the whole sea and then through it up again and Skylla was a eight headed monster snapping everything that come near. In the choice of loosing his whole ship or risk his men Odysseus choosed to go near Skylla. Two men where lost.

This is my current idea - with making the monsters in steam punk style. There may be other ides popping up before I choose the one to go with.

#28

This is the boat of Odysseus. This one may or may not go into the scene. It will maybe be made steamdriven if included.
Just had to have something started here.

OMG! I also had this book when I was a child and I really LOVE this style of illustration!

Your work looks promising, with such visual references!

Gunie, Gunie, Gunie… on her trip again. Nice to see you in! Classy and nice concept, no problems at all. Good luck!

#31

héhé… that sounds well started, I like much the style you choose, between something a bit flat and stylized… I imagine well the blend with your particular style…
I like a lot your concept sketch, and I hope you could keep the same feeling yet inside…

Good courage Gunie… it started now

Sophie - Wow, That’s fantastic! I don’t think I’ve ever met one that knew that book before. It really is amazing.

Juraj - thanks! It feels great to get started again.

Lolo - Yeah, that’s what I have in mind. If I can pull it off I’m going to do a mix of flat shapes and 3d shapes popping out of them. It’s going to take a lot of testing to get it right but I feel really inspired about it. Yep, we’re in for a challenge all right.

Hey Gunilla,

Really glad that you joined this challenge  Think the Odyssey theme is a really great inspiration for this challenge, and you can create a unique and epic image … I´m thinking on cyclops  or the sirens… many great passages on Odyssey with great potential. Following the evolution on your concept ! Good luck!! Cheers!!

Morning Gunie,

great to discover the first concept sketches and even better to read what you’re planning to do:thumbsup: . The mix of 2d and 3d the way you describe it sounds pretty much exiting and I’m really curious to follow the process.
