I don’t know so much about steampunk, but I like Vicotriana, and I don’t know so much about myths, but I like Camus’ take on Sisyphus, so I think that’s where I’ll head - Sisyphus has constructed a mechanism that moves his rock up the hill by itself and in doing so has bereft himself of the only thing he had.

Another idea:

The four horsemen of the apocalypse cast as steam engines laying waste to the countryside as a representation of the industrial revolution, a time of strife, war, famine and death. Maybe they could be in combat with some luddites.
