Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Daniel Bayona

#13

Hi Daniel,

Good to see you in this challenge. Tsukumogami is a good idea.

Good luck and keep it up.

Creo que quedaria bien si el robot tuviese un ojo medio cerrado y la mano en la barbilla como si estuviese meditando.

cheers mate!!

Hey Daniel,

Good to see you back again. I really dug your “Love is in the air” Uplift entry. This is a very Unique Concept, and No I don’t think it’s far off the subject at all. I think it’s a breath of fresh air, and has some unlimited visual possibilities.I chose Atlantis for hell’s sake! Everything looks great as usuall. Best of luck,
Brad

The sketch is a great telling in itself, but I needed to read what you wrote about
“Tsukumogami” and Shinto cermeony to get a better understanding of the concept!
There are so many interesting and incredible myths and telling from the east that
are completely unfamiliar for the rest of the world, and I’m glad this challenge makes
it possible to get some of that rich cultural myths come to surface!
All the best!

Still not sure if i go to 3d with this …i was thinking in imitate a bit the japanese edo printing style now that i took a japanese subject …but damn it. all those pipes and bolts will for sure look good in 3d too. …no idea so far.

#18

raw render for the environment. this would be a base for painting.

#19

testing the renders and placing characters cards. slow progress

#20

just checking the depth and main shapes

#21

final camera pos and main objects. still need to add the old man bike and hundreds of mechanical objects.

#22

Hey Daniel,

The backgrunds looks amazing, like a lot the contrast on it and the composition. Perhaps are much “air” between the characters, maybe you need to put the man more closer to Tsukumogami, and Tsukumogami with the head more rotated, looking at man more directly, only a comment :). Again, great work!! Cheers!!

Yeah, as some of the people here said already; It’s a nice, original and refreshing subject. Clever choice.
I have one thing to discuss. The ghost. Right now he looks like an ordinary steampunk robot. And it’s not that obvious that he’s made of the spare parts here. (Know it’s still on the concept stage but…)
My advice would be to make it animate out of something more distinguishable, like a big clock, a mangler, a furnace or something. By doing that, the message about the legend/myth is a bit clearer and one doesn’t need to read the description to get some parts of the story. Now, it just looks like a man and a robot playing chess, which could be confusing (e.g Death often play chess with his victims). I’d focus a bit more on the robot’s metamorphosis than the activity at this stage. Make the message clearer.

Now, keep it up!

Ferx: You right about the space . i bit more to the right the old man + the chess table and i think it can get solved. Some friends have commented here about the head too. One option was to have them both kind of sleepy and the spirit resting his head in his hand. other version can be the Tsukumogami smoking a pipe in a very classic style …what do you think?

HumbleHenk: I can’t agree more with you. even my wife told me about the same issue. His body has to connect in a very more complex way to the mechanical surrounding and at the same time i see like adding a bit of “floating” look to elements that became part of him. and yes he definitely has to have other type of junk on him!

another element i wanted to add is small pieces that slowly are coming to him …they may have a personality by themselves …

anyway. .Thanks for the comments guys! thats really good input!

CHEERS!!

#25

Floating parts and fragments sounds like a good idea.

#26

Hey Dude Beautiful concept:thumbsup:

#27

Great progress, Daniel! I hope you focus the lighting more on the main figure. And because it is based on Japanese myth, try adding some Japanese flavor to the artwork. Maybe some Japanese signage or letterings here and there?

Keep going!

#28

i forgot is a 2d entry during the modelling. testing the sketch render lines .

#29

still in sketch mode.

Do i go 3d with the characters ?

#30

The sketch mode looks nicer!

#31
