Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Cory Jespersen

nice stuff mate.

Not that I’m an expert, but the design and concept for the maind Scorpion character seems a little weak and under developed. Compared to a lot of the entries for this competition there is very little development or understanding of the form. I’d propably try a few thumbnails of different shapes or styles for the machine and add a few more steam punk elements … It’s looking a bit vague.

#23

I have been adding more details to the scorpion and defining the buildings in the background. So much more to do. My brain is getting tired so I think I will call it a night.

#24

Impressive picture and nice story. The earlier sketch with the Orion silhuette in the foreground actually presents a quite strong composition, highlighting the conflict. The robot looks fairly modern though, as does the environment (especially the cars but also the buildings). Did you intend to give only the Scorpion (and maybe Orion?) a steampunk appearance?

#25

Its looking better and better my friend, the silouette of the man looks cool too!!

#26

Having Orion in the foreground helps a lot with the composition and creates added depth to the art. I’m looking for a staged battle in modern time with the two steampunk characters. I may experiment with the buildings and make them more art deco. Thanks for the great feedback. It always helps to get good advice to push my concepts along. Thanks

#27

Orion Looked a little small so I scaled him up

#28

Cool style … Nice action feeling… Best of luck.

#29

Great concept and light! I am following your work

#30

Agreed. Cool stuff

#31

this is a really cool concept and its coming along nicely. Great style. I was thinking that maybe you could fade out the back of the scorpion so as to give it a little distance and bring out the massiveness of it. Anyway good luck

#32

Very cool… I like this style of rendering. I thought the car wheel on the right made for a nice feature but you’ve covered it up …so now it’s a line leading straight out of the pic… awesome work tho!

#33

Little more work on Orion. I also extended the page size to give a little more breathing room on the right side of the page. There was also some comments about wanting to see more of the car on the right side as well.

Close up view of Orion taking shape. At this point I use the brush tool with the square chalk brush number 60. Adding color at 100 percent. I then use the smudge tool to push pull an move the paint around to make creases and other clothing details. Most of my art consists of the chalk brush and the chalk brush for the smudge tool in photoshop.

#35

This is awesome! I really like the robot and scene, and the guy is progressing nicely. ARe your chalk brushes custom brushes in photoshop? I don’t recall seeing them in it.

#36

I just use the standard chalk brush 60 It gives the best painterly strokes in my opinion. I don’t use any custom brushes.

#37

Any changes to opacity or flow? This technique sounds like it could be useful for conte like half tone sketches. Although I find it really awkward to draw on a wacom board.

#38

Beautiful design and execution so far, and a nice solid composition, too. That giant mech is super! Orion is taking shape, but right now his pose seems to be somewhat lacking in energy. To me he reads like a street-person who is shuffling off towards to robot, not someone who would be about to battle it. What about having his weapon cocked and ready to fire off at the scorpion instead of just by his side? Good luck with him!

#39

For the smudge tool I keep the strength around 95 percent. for the chalk brush tool I will change the opacity at times when I’m working on shadows and full strength when I’m looking for hard edges and more details. I have been using Walcom tablets for years at home and at work and it only takes a short amount of time to get use to.

I started to play around with different poses of Orion some action poses with his bow drawn back ready to fight. After reviewing I was still drawn toward the original pose. You would almost expect to see Orion with his bow drawn back ready to fight. However Orion looks defeated. In the store the scorpion was created to be more powerful then Orion. The city is destroyed the fight is over.
