Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Cory Jespersen
This will be fun. It’s been sometime. I started with a sketch of the steam creature. I want it to be a robot but at the same time take on the characteristic of a scorpion. It will become more steampunk like as it evolves. Good luck to all.
More polished version of my original sketch. I also wanted the perspective of the subject to be more dynamic. The steampunk elements will take shape when I further develop the subject.
i really like that scorpion idea. the camera angle really brings it out. Good luck to you
The Scorpion is completely across the sky from Orion. When Scorpio rises, Orion sets. You might think that these two constellations had nothing to do with each other but you would be wrong. Orion, handsomest of men and greatest of hunters, was anathema to Diana who among her other attributes was both protector of maidens and the protector of fauna. Diana saw Orion as a menace to both her maidens and her forest animals. However, Orion was far too great a hunter to be taken down by any ordinary animal. So Diana created a special animal, the Scorpion, whose sting while painful and possibly dangerous to most men, was instantly fatal to Orion. Orion was laid low, but when both he and the Scorpion who bit him were raised to the stars, Orion fearing a repeat keeps his distance from his nemesis.
I flushed out more of the scorpion and started the concept for the background. It’s still early but the steampunk elements like the nuts and bolts will come into play later on.
I started adding some color to the art. I’m also working on the nuts and bolt and some of the steampunk elements that will be more prominent in the future. I’m also thinking of adding some cars rolled over and crushed. My art will also include orion at some point in theforeground.
This is really cool. Your 'Spetacular" piece was very nice, and I think this will be too.
I started painting in more of the detail and giving it more of a nuts and bolts steampunk look. Most of the work I do at this point involves the brush tool and smudge tool. The smudge tool works great to push and pull the colors around the page. At this point I need to start working on the other character Orion. Let me know what you guys think thus far.
At this point I’m continuing to add much more detail to the background and scorpion. I’m also using larger brushes to ruff in the sky. I’m also working on Orion and the battle they will fight. At this point I want the two coming face to face for the first time. I’m also working on the composition to make it as dynamic as I can. I think the values and composition are starting to come together.
I’m not much of a 3d artist so to add a touch of realism I like to wrap texture maps around my objects much like a 3d artist will. The only difference is I need to push, pull, smudge, blend and paint the textures so that they bring another dimension of realism to 2d art.
I love the concept, and it’s looking great so far- just wondering, will he be facing Orion?
He will be face to face with Orion. I’m not sure what character Orion will be. I will probably concepting on him next
You’re progressing nicely. Nice textures so far, and the reflections are lovely and playful for the eye. I’m wondering though what kind of weapon the scorpion has? Perhaps it would be fitting with something projectile-ish, since its made to sting orion?
Anyways, keep it up. You’ll be tough competition

Hey that is brilliant, loving the way this is coming together. It’s looking really good but, imo, I’m not sure if pushing in the camera in on your latest image is the way to go though. It feels kind of forced and you’re cutting too much of the scoprion but that’s just my personal oppinion
The gun stinger doesn’t bother me much though.
The whole thing’s looking really good though and I’m definitely going to keep an eye on your entry.
