Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Chay Hawes

#2

Well firstly this is my first contest, so hello everyone

Secondly the idea I had was for a Steampunk Santa Clause/St. Nick/Father Christmas image.
Then I searched the threads so far and found two of those already.

Now I can’t decide whether or not to go ahead with it. I had so many ideas for it whilst trying to sleep last night, but I don’t want to end up with an image similar to someone else.

(Mind you I’m sure there will be more than a few Atlantises and Greek myths so I guess as long as the content is my own, it doesn’t matter too much about “sharing” a myth)

Thirdly I have no idea if I will have time for this contest, what with lots on at work, Christmas and New Year travelling and then a honeymoon to attend the week of the deadline!

Will see how things go.

I know this is terrible but I have to start somewhere.

I’m thinking either a steampunk “sleigh” (with sewn together reindeer skins for the balloon element) or some kind of flying fortress santa workshop.

Whlist researching this theme I’ve found a lot of stuff about how rather than being St. Nicholas, Santa Claus is probably decended from the god Thor, whose description fits very well.

Lives in the north
wears red furs
has a beard
rides in a chariot pulled by two goats (not too far from a sleigh with reindeer)
also would enter the house via the fireplace and leave gifts for children.

Fascinating!

#5

this is a really rough test of part of my steampunk reindeer. Plenty still to do!

#6

progress on the reindeer

#7

better legs

#8

this is the first day I have been able to spend working on this challenge, so I’m still at early stages with it.

Need to work on the head, the steam and then the sleigh/airship.

Tomorrow I am going to finish the reindeer (plural) and then try to at least get a compostion sorted out so that I have something to aim for.

#9

duplicate reindeer!

#10

The renders look incredible so far. Love the design too. Pullies are a great idea!

#11

Thanks for replying to my thread, you are the first person to do so and it’s realy nice to get some feedback!

#12

Great renders! I like the ideas as well, will be cool to see a less serious entry!

#13

Thanks for the comment. Yes I really want to go for something light-hearted and I’m going to try and give it a children’s book illustration style if I can. All depends on how long I can work on it! (not as long as I would like!)

#14

Lovely idea and design! Rendering looks good to, I love the cloudy steam. Perhaps pull down a bit on the shinyness for the metal would make it more steam punkish. Either way, excellent start!

#15

This is a quick test of the airship which is going to carry the “sleigh”. I’m going to connect the ropes to the reindeer as well, as they will be pulling everything along.

#16

Thanks for the positive comments, yes I think you are right about the shiny metal. I’m going to focus on modelling from now on and then go back and sort out all the materials at the end. I want to try for more graphic materials (half realistic and half toony) but I’m not quite sure how yet!

#17

This is my first draft of the sleigh. I’ve just put a rough block in for the main part but I’ve modelled a captain’s chair and the runners. I’m going to try and add lots of levers and lights and handles to ramp up the Steampunk look.

#18

I’m having trouble with getting my main character to look steam punkish. at the moment he just looks like a regular santa. So I’m having a go at some steampunk gloves for him. If these go well I shall do the same for his boots

#19

further glove test

#20

If I can get the rest of the body to the same detail as the hands (and get a more stylish body shape) I think this might turn out ok.
