Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: andy circus

Thanks Per, I’m also surprised there aren’t more Thor’s or hercules’s.
Per and I are both working on Thors, but they are completely different,
although my thor will also be riding a steam scooter.
Another update! I think I’m going to try and finish the body tonight,
or at least the basic shapes, but I may also watch DVR television instead.
My DVR is at 90 percent

Hello Andy. This thing looks better in black and gold I think. Way cooler! May rethink my golden scooter myself.

By the way you should put a link to your tread.
Under your User CP in the top menu and Edit signature in the side menu you can put in a permanent link at the bottom of all your posts.

Looking forward to more updates here.

I worked on the painting a little more, as I was getting sick of modeling
the dragons gears/springs and all, I still have a lot of work to do on the painting.
I think I want to have the dragon be impossibly huge, like the sandworms
in DUNE, and also to have him getting struck in the head with lightning.
So I might wind up making a village under it or a mountain range.
Thanks Per for the user cp thing!
Here’s another idea, I guess in the Ragnarock legend Thor could only
take three steps before he was dead after the battle.
I definitely want to have the feeling that the dragon is crumbling in the background.

Haha it’s seem that we choose the same theme

Looking forward to see more from this thread

#10

I worked a little more on the body
trying to figure out the shapes.
It doesn't look very steampunkish though,

it looks like a regular thor versus some motorcycle dragon.
Once I attach the wooden steam barrels to the dragon that should help though.
I’m just joking I’m probably not going to have any wood on the dragon.

wip! I'm trying to get this thing finished pretty quickly,
so I can get back to work on my videogame :D
I spent a couple of hours yesterday trying to export particles converted

to mesh objects, with their backfaces deleted with a modified python script,
but the indigo has a problem with deleted faces in the newest version.
So the fur is planes, which I’m not sure if I could animate, but I might try.
I wasn’t sure about the helment, because yesterday it was mostly gold and silver,
and Thor looked like a mexican wrestler, or part of ‘the village people’.
I’ll fix the chocolate coins also.
This might make a cool voltron type toy or something, without the blood,
so the idea is for sale if there’s any toy distributers around here :D.

Very nice start Andy. Looking forward to see thor!!! Good luck mate.

#13

Thanks jonathan and André,
I hope I finish it!
I just realized I visited Jonathon’s cool Thor page a week ago and left a comment, but not here.
Hey André, your steampunk link is broken

This is looking great and the high-res shot is very impressive. Regarding steampunking it, I suppose the steampunk approach is to simulate the creature’s construction and workings as having come from a low-tech workshop - so you’d be seeing sharper edges/corners, less sophisticated metals/surfaces, simpler shapes, perhaps some bolts etc. But I already like the look you’re getting here and you already clearly have some steampunk elements so I encourage you to go with what you personally think works best. Keep up the great work

#15

Thanks Andy…it’s ok now.

#16

Thanks mark, you’re right, and I think if I made the dragon too steampunk
it would ruin it if not handled right, so I’m just going to have fun
That’s some good blueprints andre, that looks like that will be fun to model!

#17

I’m trying to animate it a little, even before I finish the modeling,
to motivate myself and figure stuff out.
I guess there’s only ten more days or so before that challenge is over, so i don’t know.
I don’t think I’ll finish this for the steampunk, but I can keep on working on it anyway,
and really try and detail thors armour.
I think if I could animate the gears and all on the dragon I could
stretch a 30 second animation out of it.
I want the dragon to be in the death twitches,
but I think it could be a little subtler than this
It looks like ‘thunderbird’ muppets right now though.

Awesome, i thought there was only a
week left, but there's a month for
image and 2 months for animation. :D
I read somewhere that they were
already voting. :D This will give me
more time to make it more steampunkish.
I'm basically making placeholder stuff for the armour etc. to sketch out everything.
I think I want to have some
asgardians send Thor off the edge
of asgard into space, as a funeral.

So I hope to make a 60 second (or so) animation of
the fight and a lingering (animation time extending) funeral in space.

           Hopefully it'll turn out more
'steampunk' when I mix some materials.
With the arm bit it's looking pretty Transformers-ish.
The retracting arm sleeve doesn't help anything. :D
I've never really modelled technical stuff before though,
so it's bound to be 'off', and this is just for fun anyway.
I'm hoping with a little smoke and dinged metal things will turn out ok.

Maybe this thread should be moved to the ‘modeling WIP’ section :D.

I modeled an engine last night, I still have a bit to do to make it structured.
There was a rendering mishap near the spine,
(I have to juggle the subdivisions to manage the rendering)
and I cancelled it before it cleaned up the progressive rendering,
It doesn't look very steampunk, but maybe I'll do another version.
The painted version looks pretty steampunkish though.
It gave me a weird idea to have thor in the
future when the the galaxy is destroyed, collapsing and creating
the big bang, and the primitive nordic myth is an echo from the
         future in a time loop.

#21

I had a good idea that in the future LOKI is a multidimensional weapon/evil computer,
and not a humanoid. :D He's literally powered by a contained and compressed
duplicate dimension version of the sun.
I'm actually going to animate this now, as a short animation project!
There's enough interesting elements to where it would maintain my interest,
and the set pieces wouldn't be too difficult.

#22

nice, I really like the giffs,

#23

Thanks Kilduff!
I like how your concept is forming through your wip’s.
I used gimp to make the .gifs, with the ‘save as animation’ option.

#24

this is looking great!
i really like the colors you used, very steampunkish!
good luck dude
