And here comes the concept I have chosen for now (that can still change):

Samson and Delilah

It doesn’t look like a steampunk yet, but the idea is that Samson’s hair will be of thin pipes and wires that connect to various parts of his body, body armor and machinery on his back. The scissors Delilah has in her hand will be also steam powered.

He has opened to her so much, that he allows her to take the protective armored plates off his hair…

I have used about 7 different ref photographs to get the poses I wanted…

My main concern here is the composition and poses that would tell the story the best way.
I want to learn as much as possible about working with 2d media, so don’t hold back and please criticise :slight_smile:

Great idea, and surely a great topic, I like your 3D portfolio, I’m curious to watch your 2D wip. May be you could start with a 2D “dummy” with kind of poser character to do this more easly ?

David, thanks! When you say "a 2D “dummy” do you mean a dummy character in 3d, pose it and then paint over it? That would be sure much easier for me. Or did you mean some 2d trickery :wink:

I mean a 3D character posed with some main object as guide line as I used in this painting ( I posted a WIP in the comments ) >> http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=672547
This technique can be good to pose the characters with a simple front view and after find a good point of view to add some drama. Can ba a good base too if you want to look how react some light & shadows as documentation.

Thanks David, it’s a great idea, and it’s going to be my next step. I can see all the benefits of it. (Hope not to jump off the truck and end up doing 3d again :blush:).

this sure looks very intriguing! love, pain and mechanics all in one!

btw … i know you’ll require it later … but just to give you some more ideas about metals n stuff … you can check out brass objects for their reflection, texture and color … that way working on a background/composition will help you in some way …

I am in the process of preparing the dummy 3d characters for experimenting with poses and composition.

Here my dummy characters with very basic rigging and skinning (figures are some free models given by 3D World magazine).

My main concern here is the composition and poses. On the left - only posed figures, on the right - sketch of what to come over them.
I have also added some basic lights - just to indicate the color and direction of lights.

All comments are welcome, so please go crazy and pick on anything you see out of place, or anything that can improve composition and poses :slight_smile:

P.S. small details like hand poses are not there yet - need to get the “big things” playing properly first :slight_smile: And body proportions will change too - these are just dummies :slight_smile:

Good work, and good placement of your 3D “dummy”.
If you want to keep the blueish light of the scene ; be carrefull of the yellow of the hair : too much of saturation in it and this color keep all viewer attention.

You are too kind to me - looking at it after some hours I can see it looks like crap :slight_smile:
I should be keeping myself only to poses at this stage - minus any kind of lighting attempts or such, or sketching over it.

I want to know how you 2d minded people are working with composition. In what terms do you think, how do you see the image from compositional point of view, how do you decide the perspective? What kind of lines do you see inside the image?
I am a 3d technical person, I know how to do those technically difficult tasks… And I want to learn how do you create a good looking image…

This one help me a lot to undersand somes tips of compositions.

After, if you have too much of choice to do when painting, you can divide the work with a black and white drawing and volume work on value first, and coloring at last part the picture as I do in my tutorial here : http://www.tdt3d.be/articles_viewer.php?art_id=51
