Latest Update: Work In Progress: Discworld - The Great Star Turtle - Concept Update

#2

Hello,

This is my first challenge entry ever. Seeing the works submitted by other artists made me hesitate a while but I decided to give it a try anyways. I have some extra time before my classes start in January. Therefore, the time frame should not be a problem.

My image is based on ancient Hindu legend about the world supported by four elephants standing on a giant turtle. The same idea exists in other cultures around the world. In some legends, elephants are excluded. Like in Native American legend about the turtle island. In Christian legends, however, the turtle is excluded as well and there is only the giant world plate.

Also, the turtle is the setting for a comedic fantasy book series “Discworld” by the British author Terry Pratchet and computer game “Discworld” inspired by the book.

I hope to get permission to use “Discworld” as a title. Until then, “The Great Star Turtle” stands.

I appreciate any c&c. Especially about the composition and colors since I am at the concept stage at the moment.

Here are some references:
The turtle Island (Native American)
Turtle legends and symbolism
Discworld series

hi aleksandar,
I think the composition is quite good, maybe you could make it to follow even more the diagonal of the canvas… I see you are using some red/blue light sources in the turtle and elephants, it looks good I think… so good luck for the challenge, you’ll see how it was good decosion to join despite yout hesitation, hehe

Here is an update. I started with modeling and so far I just did the basic shape. I will start working on steampunk style from here.

As you can see, I decided to go for more naturalistic elephant figures instead of elephant shaped boilers.

#5

Hey, your model looks great so far! How are you going to let the disc end? Will there just be a kind of wall, will the dic be slightly warped so that the water stays on or will the water flow off in rivers? (last two combined seem best to me) If you are going for the last option, be sure to add lots of rust along the channels even though there is no oxygen to react with. :stuck_out_tongue:

#6

Here is updated pre-visualization with new models.

#7

I like the idea of seeing A’Tuin swimming through space. If yu’re going for the Discworld approach rather then the Hindu philosophy behind it, you might want to take into consideration that the Disc’s sun and moon orbit around the turtle -> That could give some nice lighting possibilities. Just a thought

#8

I decided to make the elephant into a furnace. It is half way done. I appreciate if you have any suggestions.

@Olim
I think Im going to make some kind of boundary with pipes and water turning into vapor. Perhaps even clouds. And I like the rust as an idea. m gonna try and see how it works.

@mickarrow
Definitely! And the sun is going to have huge protuberances and a fire trail along the orbit.

#10

This is a test render of the previous entry.

#11

…And the concept update with new models…

#12

This is finished elephant model. I will go back to textures after I finish the turtle.

#13

Is very nice how the Elephant looks like. Love the head and ears…
well done!

#14

Thanks. I still intend to work on textures.

#15

One more update with final elephant models. I will work on the final textures and lighting after I setup the turtle.
