Steampunk Myths and Legends Entry: Adam Nichols

#1

Adam Nichols is entered in the “Steampunk Myths and Legends” update: View Challenge Page

Latest Update: Concept / pre-visualization: Atlas - Steampunk Challange

#2

Atlas - Greek Mythology - Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the western edge of Gaia, the Earth and hold up Ouranos, the Sky on his shoulders, to prevent the two from resuming their primordial embrace.

These are some small thumbnail compositional studies for the image. I chose to start with these as the design of the character/environment will ultimately rely heavily on what angle its seen from. The most successful of these I believe are thumbnails 2,6,7 and 8 and will depend on the rest of my ideation and designs as to which elements I will pull into the final design.

Really nice composition studies, I love the atmosphere of 8 but I like the angle of 6.

After hearing about this Challenge I instantly felt compelled to enter and give at of thought to which Myth or Legend I would choose. A few ideas I was keen on were;

Ragnarok - Norse Mythology -

Oni - Japanese Mythology -

Kintaro - Japanese Mythology -

Chinese Dragon - Chinese Mythology -

Icarus - Greey Mythology -

But in the end I think my favorite idea was this one, it has a whole load of scope and potential for dramatic storytelling and visual drama.

Atlas - Greek Mythology - Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the western edge of Gaia, the Earth and hold up Ouranos, the Sky on his shoulders, to prevent the two from resuming their primordial embrace.

Ideas and notes for this ;

  • condemnation and punishment - this is the story of Atlas
  • primordial - son of Gaia (personifying the earth) and Aether (personification of the “upper sky,” space, and heaven, and the elemental god of the "Bright, Glowing, Upper Air)
  • Atlas is paired with Phoebe and governs the moon (perhaps he longs to be with her and is gazing at the moon?)
  • Giant steampunk giant with the sky on his back
    -Vista Establishing shot of the steampunk landscape of this realityof Gaia and Ouranos.
  • Rustic palette - classical painterly feel - reds and greens, tan grey, yellow and black
  • War of the Titans - the ten-year series of battles fought between the two races of deities long before the existence of mankind: the Titans, fighting from Mount Othrys or Mount Etna and the Olympians, who would come to reign on Mount Olympus
  • Thus he was Atlas Telamon, “enduring Atlas.”
  • A common misconception is that Atlas was forced to hold the Earth on his shoulders, but this is incorrect.
  • a symbol of strength or stoic endurance

More sketches on their way soon…

definately! 7/8’s atmophere with the values reads alot better and youre right about the angle in 6, though I do equally like the bold angle in 2, as much as I ususally steer away from symmetry.
