Starting to do illustrations....need advice

Hello all,
I am starting to do illustrations with Photoshop CS4 and was looking for some advice on how to get started. My first illustrations will be for dental and medical. I have the reference materials but as for the techniques I am kinda blind. Any advice on what tutorials or books to get to learn illustration?
