Starbucks match-to-photo

#1

Hi, new to the forums here. I’ve been meaning to post some work, and finally decided to just do it.
So for this project, I have taken some photographs at a local Starbucks shop. I wanted to focus on something not too complicated, with a variety of textures and lighting. I ended up deciding on a shot of a work station. I took this photograph into Maya, and I am working on recreating it in 3D. I did not take measurements of the environment first, which is likely a mistake on my part, but I’m working with what I have. I just finished the modeling for the most part and was about to start on texturing and lighting. My goal for this is to help me work on Renderman and to start a new series of projects, which I hope to post here as I do them.

First, the photograph from Starbucks:

Now the current render:

I modeled everything and added an ambient occlusion. Any feedback on where it is now would be appreciated, and advice on where to go with it and what changes to make are welcome. I plan to make some of the lines less perfect, adding bends and bevels where I can, and just dirtying up the geometry, I’m just not sure what I should do in model and what should be in texture/shader.
Thanks in advance!

Really good modeling, it looks pretty close to the reference. If you’re trying to go 100% though, just make the corrections you stated, but personally it looks great the way it is. Can’t wait to see it textured.

Pretty good. Great attention to the detail and you match the camera angle.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I have been running into something I’m not sure how to fix. The tile background in the original picture has a slight bump to it. I wanted to use the PxrDisney shader (perhaps there is a better one to use), but I can’t seem to figure out how to get the bump to work. I haven’t really explored normal maps yet, but since this is a simple tile pattern which I can make procedurally, I didn’t want to bother with that. The challenge right now is that I can’t get the bump to show up, and none of the settings seem to change it.
What I did was attach a procedural texture (grid) to a 2DBump in Maya, and then attached that to the Bump Normal. However, it didn’t seem to matter if I used 2D or 3D, if I used alpha or red channel (it is black and white), if i adjusted the alpha/color gain or offset, of changed the value of the bump. I even tried connecting the PxrBump, which didn’t seem to work either. The tutorials I ran into didn’t have the problem I’m having. Is it a bug? Is it something in the IT? Did I not turn something on or leave out something? Definitely struggling to figure this one out, I’ll keep at it but if anyone has any advice I’d love to hear it. Thanks!

As you can see the back wall lacks any bump…
Oh, and these are all still rough, unfinished textures with no lighting per say. I still need to add the powder geo and the liquid in the jugs up top, and their rough textures, and then I go on to refine them, and then I dirty/scratch everything up.
