DESCRIPTION:

Hi everyone !!
In the year 1993, when the movie “Jurassic Park I” released, I was a kid and saw the movie on big screen. Those dangerous creatures with cruel behaviour, I had never seen those kind of scenes before in that time. So just became crazy from that time till today about Dinosaurs, specially the raptors !!

Remembering those amazing creations - I want to personally dedicate my entry to the great man who gave life to the creatures whom nobody ever seen, the man who amazed everyone by his work in the films those cannot be forgotten -

Stan Winston

This time I enjoyed a lot working on dinos, specially skin texture was very interesting and new to me so I learned very much from it. Now I realized that your first and second level of blocking should be very accurate and perfectly finished before you go to the next level. So nice experience again. :wip:

Best Wishes to all the participants !!

It’s crazy how Stan Winston created so many of the memorable movie creatures and characters I grew up watching! I wish I had the time and skills to have made some of my other favorites, and I’m proud to pay tribute to him with this Pumpkinhead model.

I really enjoyed working on this model, and this being my first HCM challenge, it was also a great learning experience. I highly recommend these challenges to anyone who wants to up their skills, seeing such a great standard upheld by everyone is a real motivator. I’ll definitely be participating in the next one too.

RIP Stan Winston. I can’t wait to see his work on the T-600’s in Terminator 4.

And cheers to all other participants, seeing your work was a real motivator and inspiration to me!

Great theme: Rest in Peace Stan Winston…

It was very inspiring to see the works of others users…

Description:
This was my first HMC and though I had first planned on making a Power Loader vs Alien Queen diaroma from Aliens, I decided that Alien Queen was too complicated to make in given time with Power Loader and Ripley. So I gave my attention on Power Loader.

I already used to love the design of this machine but as I inspected it for modeling, I realized how genious the whole mechanics of it was and how really workable it is.

This was a challenge that was so nice to watch, thanks to Stan Winston and all the other contributors.

DESCRIPTION: I've observed HMC's for a while now, and after catching this one a few weeks into it and seeing the work being done I felt compelled to join. The talent demonstrated on this challenge and the support of artists of all levels really made this a special one (IMHO). Also, I think Stan would have gotten a kick out of all artists and work from this challenge that was inspired by his legacy.

As for my piece, I see a lot that I want/need to fix (eyes, hair, etc) But i'm relatively happy with what I'm showing considering the amount of time I was able to give it. I learned a ton working on this and from observing the other artists. This HMC got me to finally get off my butt and participate, and for that I'm grateful.

WIP THREAD

DESCRIPTION
This is the first of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It’s the Tyrannosaurus from Jurassic Park, a great display of amazing animatronics and VFX done by Winston and ILM. One of my main inspirations to start studying CG.

Details:
100% poly painted in Zbrush. Base mesh modeled in Maya, imported in Zbrush for rapid prototyping, retopologized in Maya, back to ZBrush for detail reprojection and further fine detailing and posing using Transpose Master. No images were used for texturing, only regular alphas. The final mesh has about 12 million polys but it was rendered with one subD level less, at 3 million polys, imported directly to Maya. No displacements nor normal maps/bump used. Everything is pure geometry. Rendered in Mental Ray with 3 area lights. FastskinSSS shader used. Only color map and cavity map used (cavity plugged into the ambient slot). Render time: about 25 minutes each, on a Dual Quadcore + 8GB RAM, running Maya 2008 and Zbrush 3.1

I had a blast. Congrats to everybody who managed to finish and thank you all who stopped by my thread to say hello.

Cheers,
-Kris

DESCRIPTION
This is the second of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It’s a caricature of Stan Winston, originally painted on canvas by the master Sebastian Krüeger. In a sense, this is a double tribute: to the Master Winston and to Krüeger.

Details:
100% poly painted in Zbrush. Base mesh modeled in Maya, imported in Zbrush for rapid prototyping, retopologized in Maya, back to ZBrush for detail reprojection and further fine detailing. No images were used for texturing, only regular alphas. The final mesh has about 7 million polys but it was rendered with one subD level less in Maya. No displacements nor normal maps/bump used. Everything is pure geometry. Rendered in Mental Ray with 2 area lights and some white planes. Final Gather activated. FastskinSSS shader used. Only color map and cavity map used (cavity plugged into the ambient slot). Render time: about 1 hour, 5 minutes each (800x1000), on a Dual Quadcore + 8GB RAM, running Maya 2008 and Zbrush 3.1

I had a blast. Congrats to everybody who managed to finish and thank you all who stopped by my thread to say hello.

Description: This was my first HMC and I had lots of fun and challenges with the entry. I decided to go with the Mayor Ghoul because when I saw who was involved in the creation of the short film ( Stan Winston, Michael Jackson, and Stephen King) it just stuck out to me and after watching it seemed like a fun character. Stan Winston was the director of the film and always he is masterful with what he does. Got a lot of good practice with the peice. Hope y’all enjoy!

Production: The base mesh was modeled in Maya, basic joints put in place for posing the torso, arms, and fingers, and then exported to ZBrush for sculpting. Renders were from ZBrush. Roughly 60hr over the past few weeks.

WIP Thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=663859

Additional Info: My first HMC is done whoo hoo! I spent between 30 and 40 hours on this, it could have potentially been a lot less if I hadn’t spent so much time on minor tweaking and learning from my mistakes, but that’s part of the process. I don’t really know how to go about doing a beauty render so just submitting orthos for now. I’m also running late for work will have wire frames up when I get home, just wanted to submit these images before the deadline, I learned a lot and thanks to everyone who helped me out with critiques!

I can say this is one of the toughest hcm i’ve ever tried out. I’ve constantly been under quite alot of stress seeing how well the other artist in this challenge are doing. During this challenge, i’ve picked up more tricks on how to fake details. Sad to say due to the lack of time, the end result has not match up to what i envision.
I’ll continue to work on the model + texturing once i can manage to find time off from my work.

Title: Predator Unmasked
Artist Name: Wyatt Harris
Category: Bust
WIP Thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=662370

Method:
Lightwave for base meshes, ZBrush from that point on.

Description:
Tribute to Stan Winston. Until I delved into this project I never really realized just how many iconic films and characters Stan was involved with. You could list Predator, Aliens and Terminator and have said enough but the list goes on and on and on. Thanks for all of your great, inspirational work Stan, rest in peace.

Well, in case you hadn’t heard my tragic tale. My original goal was the complete shot of the predator unmasked. Hurricane Gustav slammed into Baton Rouge (my home) creating havoc in every way. My whole yard looks like it’s covered in downed trees. 10 days without power and having to scrounge for basic means changed my plans for this project quite a bit. At first I thought, “Ah well, good try Wyatt, better luck next time.” Then I stopped and realized, “Hold up, I’ve got a nice bit of work done, let me tidy it up and get it out the door. Don’t let all of that time go to waste.” So that’s what I did and my full character turned into a bust. So screw you Gustav!

This is probably the best thing in CG I’ve ever created. I studied quite a bit before the sports icon challenge and in that one I put everything into practice that I’d learned. This challenge was the advancement of all of that practice and even more study. I still need to dig deeper into polypainting and quite a few other topics but I’m loving the results so far.
